Baseball Preview: Wolves host UAH

Carrollton, GA - After a successful run through the first half of the Gulf South Conference season, the UWG baseball team begins the second half on Saturday afternoon as the Wolves play host to Alabama-Huntsville in conference action.

The Wolves come into the game with an overall record of 17-12 on the 2012 season and West Georgia's 8-4 record is the best already at UWG since the 2005 season. With four series left in conference play, the Wolves are currently tied for second place in the league with North Alabama.

Three UWG players each had a banner week last week, starting with junior #Tanner Drennen#, who was 7-for-10 over the weekend at New Orleans. Drennen was 8-for-15 in the four games last week with a .533 batting average and five RBI. He was 8-for-15 in those four games, with two doubles and three runs scored.

Senior #Stuart Drew# had his best week in some time, going 8-for-16 for a .500 batting average and a team-high six runs scored in the week. He was 4-for-4 on the basepaths, bringing his season stolen base total to 16 out of 17 attempts on the year. Drew was also tied for the team lead in RBI with six.

The third was right-fielder #Brett Wright#, who was 7-for-16 last week for a .438 batting average. Six of his hits were singles, but he had one triple as well, driving in three runs for the week on one play.

The Chargers come into the weekend with a tough pitching staff and solid hitting, as Alabama-Huntsville hits .286 as a team and has a team ERA of 3.52. In addition, UAH does not give away anything for free, as the Chargers lead the nation in walks allowed per nine innings at 1.99 per nine.

University of Alabama in Huntsville senior shortstop Grant DeBruin earned Gulf South Conference Baseball Player of the Week honors for the week ending March 25. The honor is the second this season for DeBruin, and also the second of his career, while marking the third overall honoree this year.

DeBruin batted 11-for-20 at the plate while pacing the Chargers to a 2-3 record on the week, lacing three doubles and one home run while plating nine RBI and scoring four runs. The senior recorded multi-hit games in all but one contest.

The Boaz, Ala., native closed Tuesday's doubleheader versus Lincoln Memorial with a 3-for-5 effort which included five RBI and his league-leading sixth home run. DeBruin added three more RBI in the series opener at West Alabama and finished the series with two doubles in the rubber game.
