Cleveland, MS - The 2012 regular season is in it's home stretch, as the UWG baseball team began their final series of the schedule on Saturday afternoon at Ferris Field. The Wolves struggled out of the gate, falling 12-2 in the opener, then lost 3-1 in the nightcap.
The Wolves came into this weekend's series having won more games in conference play than any UWG baseball team in six years, but looking to add to that number and end on a high note against the ninth-ranked Statesmen.
With that in mind, head coach
Skip Fite sent #
Cody Skinner# to the mound in the opener. The UWG ace for the majority of the year, the junior struggled, giving up seven runs on seven hits while walking three. The defense did no favors as well, as two errors led to three unearned runs on Skinner's watch.
The Wolves had familiar struggles on the offensive side, plating just two runs on 10 hits on the afternoon. The two UWG runs came off the bats of juniors in the contest, as #
Evan Hester# had an RBI single in the fifth inning and #
Brett Wright# picked up an RBI single in the sixth.
Wright and senior #
Stuart Drew# were the only players with multiple hits in the contest, as each were 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
In the second game, UWG starter #
Chase Riemer# found himself locked in a pitcher's duel with DSU starter Colton Mitchell. West Georgia's right-hander gave up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first, then allowed just one run on three hits for the remainder of the game.
The Wolves pulled to within a run in the top of the sixth inning, as #
Keith Borger# led off the frame with a single, then moved to second on a one-out sacrifice bunt from Drew. Wright brought home his second run of the day in the next at-bat with his second single of the game, making the score 2-1.
But in the bottom of the sixth, the Statesmen picked up a run on two hits before Fite handed the ball to freshman #
Alex Allen#, who closed the door in getting the final two outs with a strikeout and a popout to short. West Georgia went down in order in the top of the seventh to close out the contest.
Wright was 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and was 4-for-7 on the afternoon to lead the UWG offensive. The Wolves fall to 22-22 on the season and 9-12 in Gulf South Conference play heading into the final regular season game on Sunday. Delta State moves to 34-11 with the victory and 16-7 against the GSC, clinching a tie for the regular season conference title.
