Carrollton, GA - The 2012 baseball regular season came to a close Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, Miss., as the UWG Wolves fell in the season finale to the #9 Delta State Statesmen by a 7-4 count at Ferris Field.
The loss drops the West Georgia record for the 2012 season to 22-23 and 9-13 in Gulf South Conference play while the Statesmen move to 35-11 and 17-7 in the GSC. Both teams now move to the 2012 GSC tournament, which will be held just up the road at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, home of the Rome Braves.
West Georgia, the host of this year's tournament, will kick off the tourney at 10 a.m. on Friday as the seventh seed against second seeded West Alabama. The Wolves took 2-of-3 from the Tigers earlier this season in Livingston. Delta State lands the top seed and will play eight seed Christian Brothers at 4:30.
#
Stuart Drew# kicked things off in solid fashion in the top of the first on Sunday afternoon, as he and third baseman #
Andy Marinelli# did what they have done so many times in the past two seasons. Drew led off with an infield single, then advanced to second after a failed pickoff attempt. The senior stole third, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Marinelli to give the Wolves a 1-0 advantage.
UWG starting pitcher #
Seth McClure# cruised through the first two innings, but things got a little wild in the bottom of the third, as DSU's Tyler Aldridge led off the frame on base after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a ground ball to third, then moved to third base on a wild pitch. Sam Kidd then singled, scoring Aldridge, tying the contest.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Statesmen picked up two runs, with all runners getting on base with two outs in the inning.
But the UWG hitters were not out yet, as the Wolves came back furiously in the top of the sixth. With #
Justin Croft#, #
Brett Wright# and #
Andy Marinelli# all aboard in the sixth, #
Evan Hester# doubled to right-center, clearing the bases and putting the Wolves up 4-3 on their top-10 opponent.
That would do it for the scoring for West Georgia, but Delta State responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach.
Marinelli and Drew were each 2-for-3 on the afternoon with a run scored and Marinelli had an RBI. Hester was 1-for-4 with the big hit in the sixth giving him three RBI. Drew's performance put him on top for the UWG season batting title with a .345 batting average. Hester was the RBI man on the season with 38 and #
Garrett May# was the Wolves' home run champ with five.
