The 2012 UWG baseball season could be summed up as the best of times and the worst of times, as the Wolves started hot to open the year, but injuries in key positions cooled off that hot start as West Georgia finished the season at 22-22 overall, including a 9-13 record in conference play.
Through the first 21 games of the year, the Wolves were rolling with a 14-7 record overall and a 6-1 record in Gulf South Conference play. The 6-1 record included a sweep of Christian Brothers, winning 2-of-3 at West Alabama and the series opener against North Alabama.
The team batting average through that span was .303, led by catcher
Galen Smith's .366 average. On the pitching front, the Wolves were steamrolling opponents with a 3.63 team ERA and no weekend starter had an ERA of less than 3.00.
But in the final two games of the series against UNA, the Wolves suffered a pair of devastating losses that changed the face of the season.
In the final 23 games of the year, the UWG offense stayed steady at .303, but the output compared to opposing offenses suffered. The Wolves scored 106 runs in that span, but gave up 159 runs. West Georgia hit just six home runs, but gave up 17 and opponents hit .318 against the UWG pitching staff. Wright was a bright spot, hitting .400 down the stretch.
In Gulf South Conference play during that final span, the Wolves split a two-game set with Valdosta, beat New Orleans in 2-of-3, but were swept by West Florida, Alabama-Huntsville and Delta State.
Drew won the season batting title with a .345 batting average, just slipping by Smith, who finished the year at .344.
Chase Riemer was the Wolves' top starter, as he was 4-2 with a 4.40 ERA, striking out 33 batters while walking just 15.
