Carrollton, GA - The final match of the first half of the 2013 Gulf South Conference volleyball season for the West Georgia Wolves was a long, drawn out match that saw the Wolves overtake West Alabama with a 3-2 victory on a night that turned out to be a career-night for one UWG player.
Senior libero #
Melissa Holt# took a step closer to becoming the best to ever suit up at that position in UWG history, as she set a school and career record Thursday night with 40 digs. The Wolves also outblocked the best blocking team in the GSC with nine team blocks for UWG to six for UWA.
Throughout the night, neither team seemed to be able to have a lead that was safe, beginning with the first set, as West Georgia took the first decent advantage with a 12-7 early lead. UWA caught the Wolves at 14-14, but UWG pulled away late for a 25-19 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was a mirror image, as West Alabama jumped out to a 13-7 lead, only to have West Georgia nearly catch them at 23-22 and then again at 24-23. But the Tigers prevailed on set point, taking a 25-23 victory and pulling even in the match at 1-1.
West Georgia jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third set and never looked back, taking a 25-20 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match. Junior middle #
Kendall Williams# had four kills in the set, leading the West Georgia offensive. Williams had a career-high 13 kills in the match and was one of five Wolves with double-digit kills against West Alabama.
The fourth set was one of the toughest battles of a hard-fought match, as neither team could take a decided advantage in the set. Neither the Wolves or the Tigers led by more than three points in that fourth set, and West Georgia actually had match point, leading 24-23. But UWA fired off three straight points to send the match to a fifth set.
It was the fourth straight five-set match for West Georgia and the second straight at The Coliseum. On October 4, the Wolves bested Valdosta State 3-2, but fell 3-2 to both Christian Brothers and Union on the road last weekend in Tennessee.
West Georgia never trailed in that final set, jumping out to a 10-6 lead and then cruising to a 15-9 victory to win the match on Volley Pink night at The Coliseum. Senior #
Emily Reul# finished off the night with a kill for the final point of the match.
#
Lesley Bemis# led West Georgia with 15 kills on the night, followed by Williams and #
Tiesha Alston with 13 kills. Reul added 12 kills and #
Helen Menchinger# had 11 to close out the double-digit kills in the match. #
Amanda Miller# and #
Kayla Hartman# split the assists down the middle, as each had 32 in the match. Holt had 40 digs, followed by #
Samantha Drane# with 13 and Reul with 12.
As a team, the Wolves hit .236 on the night and were led by Alston with a .417 hitting percentage and Williams at .379. Bemis led the attack on the front line with four blocks for the Wolves.
West Georgia now has three matches against Sunshine State Conference opponents over the next two days as a part of the GSC/SSC Crossover at The Coliseum. The Wolves play first tomorrow against Rollins at 4:30 p.m.
