2013 Volleyball Preview: Week 8

Carrollton, GA - With nothing but Gulf South Conference matches left in the 2013 season, the Wolves are in the home stretch of the year, as nine matches remain in the second half of the GSC season.

West Georgia has struggled on the road this season, winning just one match on an opponents' home court thus far and to be successful, the Wolves will have to change that as six of the nine remaining matches are on the road. That stretch begins this weekend at North Alabama on Friday and at Alabama Huntsville on Saturday.

The Wolves come into the weekend with a 10-9 overall record on the season with a 5-4 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
North Alabama Preview
One of the most storied programs in Gulf South Conference volleyball history has struggled thorugh the first 21 matches of the 2013 season, as North Alabama comes into the weekend with a 5-16 record on the season.

Despite the record, three of their wins have come in GSC play in the confines of Flowers Hall in Florence, Ala. The Lions have a rich history in that building and are always a tough out when playing at home.

In 2012, the Wolves swept the season series with UNA for the first time in the history of the series. That is within sight again, as the Wolves won the first meeting in Carrollton 3-1 on September 20 in the GSC opener for each school

In that match, the biggest difference in the two teams was in the attack errors category, as the Wolves had 14 in four-set match while UNA had 22. Emily Reul led all hitters in the contest with 16 kills on the night and Melissa Holt had 21 digs in the match. UNA was led by Megan Gorey and Natasha Fomina with 14 kills and Shantel Federick had 26 digs.

Alabama-Huntsville Preview

West Georgia got their payback on the UAH Chargers earlier this season, as the Wolves avenged last season's first-round loss in the GSC tournament with a hard-fought victory over the Chargers at The Coliseum.

UAH comes into the weekend with a 7-14 mark on the season and a 4-5 record against Gulf South Conference opponents. The Chargers will take on Valdosta State on Friday evening before Saturday's match against UWG.

In the first meeting, West Georgia hit .285 en route to their second Gulf South Conference victory of the season, besting the Chargers 3-1. Seniors Emily Reul and Lesley Bemis led the way for UWG with 18 and 15 kills, respectively, and senior libero Melissa Holt had 27 digs in the victory. Amanda Miller had her second-best night as a setter with 56 assists in the contest.

On the UAH side, Haley Snyder had 17 kills at a .357 clip in the match and added 15 digs. She was one of four players on the night with double-digit digs in the match, including 17 from libero Stacey Sargent. Olivia Bauman added 15 kills, but also had five attack errors in the match.

The match was a very hard-fought affair that UWG nearly took in straight sets, but UAH won the second set 27-25.

News and Notes
Five set matches have been the norm in Gulf South Conference play for the Wolves in the past three weeks, as each of the last four GSC matches have gone the distance. In those matches, UWG has come out on top twice, beating Valdosta State and West Alabama at home and falling to Union and Christian Brothers on the road.

Prior to those matches going to five sets, the Wolves had two matches that went to five, falling to Montevallo on September 10 and beating Georgia College on September 14.

This weekend will go a long way in separating the teams in the hunt for a top seed at the 2013 GSC tournament. currently, the Wolves are in third place among teams who will play in this year's tourney, as UWG is one game behind Valdosta State and three behind West Florida.

Senior libero Melissa Holt had a week to remember last week, rejoining the 30-dig club twice and entering the 40-dig club for the first time in her career. Against West Alabama, she led the Wolves with 40 digs, setting a school record. Against Palm Beach Atlantic, the senior had 32 digs, the fifth time in her career that she has had at least 30 digs in a match.

With those numbers, Holt was named as the Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.

The Wolves lead the Gulf South Conference in hitting percentage with a team percentage of .217 on the seaosn. West Georgia is just behind conference front-runner West Florida in the kills category. The Wolves average 12.97 kills per set on the year and UWF averages 13.06 kills per set
