Florence, AL - The UWG volleyball squad started off the second half of the season on a solid note Friday evening at Flowers Hall on the campus of the University of North Alabama, as the Wolves used a spectacular hitting performance in the fourth set to take a 3-1 win over the Lions.
It was the second time in as many years that UWG has swept the season series with North Alabama, making the win the fourth straight for the Wolves over UNA. When West Georgia accomplished that feat last season, it was the first time UWG had swept a season series against North Alabama in the history of the series.
North Alabama came out firing in the hopes of holding serve on their home court against the Wolves. UNA built a solid 17-12 lead midway through the first set before West Georgia came roaring back. The Wolves fired off six straight points to take an 18-17 lead. North Alabama took the lead again and was on set point at 25-24, but a miscue gave the momentum back to the UWG side of the court, as a service error tied the set at 25-25.
West Georgia then reeled off two straight points, finishing off the set with a kill from senior #
Lesley Bemis# to take a 1-0 lead in the match. #
Tiesha Alston# was the offensive leader in the set with six kills in nine attempts, while #
Emily Reul# had six digs. Alston added two blocks to lead the Wolves on the front line.
In the second set, the two teams played to a draw yet again for much of the set, but this time it was UNA with the 27-25 victory, tying the match at 1-1. Bemis and junior #
Amanda Miles# led the Wolves with four kills each in the set and Alston added two more block assists to lead the Wolves.
In the third set, the Wolves built a quick 11-7 lead and never looked back, keeping UNA at arm's length for the remainder of the set. For the first time in the match, a team had a set point and put it away, as Miles picked up the final kill of the set for a 25-20 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. Miles and Bemis had three kills in the set as the Wolves had their best hitting percentage of the match at .226.
In the fourth set, the Wolves looked to be on the ropes, trailing 18-15 late. But then nine straight points, including four straight on service aces from Reul, fueled a late-set run that pushed the Wolves over the top. Miles was on fire in the set, collecting six of her team-high 13 kills for the match in the fourth. The junior had the final kill of the match, giving the Wolves a 25-19 victory and a 3-1 win.
Bemis was the only other UWG player in double-figures in kills on the evening, as the senior had 11 kills. Reul had 11 digs on the night and four service aces. Senior #
Melissa Holt# continues to inch closer to the career record for digs, as she had 12 on the evening. The senior now has 1,402 career digs, 12 shy of Stephanie Singleton's record of 1,414.
West Georgia moves to 11-9 on the season and 6-4 in Gulf South Conference play, while UNA falls to 5-17 and 3-7 in the GSC. The Wolves will play at Alabama Huntsville on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. to close out the weekend on the road.
