Record falls in UWG victory over UWF

Carrollton, GA - Records and champions fell Tuesday night at The Coliseum, as the UWG volleyball squad powered past the 21st-ranked West Florida Argonauts in a crucial Gulf South Conference battle.

The Argos have won four straight Gulf South Conference championships and came into the match at 18-6 overall and 10-1 in GSC play. UWF also held a 24-2 advantage in the series history with West Georgia.

But the one record that has been on center stage for the past week finally fell as well. In the first set, libero #Melissa Holt# had four digs, but the first two were the biggest, as she tied and then broke the UWG record for career digs with those two stats. She eclipsed Stephanie Singleton, who holds multiple records at West Georgia, and ended the night with 16 digs, giving her 1,429 for her career.

Fueled by the record falling, the Wolves dominated the Argos in the opening set, building an early 15-9 lead and pushing through for a 25-15 lead. West Georgia had 15 kills in the set with just one error and a team hitting percentage of .389 in building a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was a complete reversal of fortune for the Wolves, as West Florida built a 15-7 lead, then tied the match with an equally dominating 25-12 victory.

Potentially the most crucial set of the night was the third, as the Wolves gradually built a 23-18 lead and looking to be primed to move ahead 2-1 in the match. But West Florida went on a run, pulling to within a point a 24-23. #Tiesha Alston# closed out the run though with a kill to give UWG a 25-23 victory.

Set four was another dominating performance by the Wolves, as West Georgia won 25-15 to take the match 3-1 and win for just the third time in the history of the series.

Senior #Lesley Bemis# led the way with 13 kills and four blocks on the night. As a team, the Wolves had 11 blocks, including four from #Amanda Miles# and six from Alston. #Emily Reul# and #Helen Menchinger# each had 10 kills in the match, and Reul added 10 digs to the tally.

Setters #Kayla Hartman# and #Amanda Miller# split time in that role, with Hartman leading the way with 20 assists and 14 digs while Miller had 18 assists.

West Georgia moves to 12-10 on the season and 7-5 in GSC play. The Wolves return to the road on Friday evening, taking on Shorter in Rome, GA at 7 p.m.
