Carrollton, GA - With just three matches left in the first half of the Wolves' Gulf South Conference schedule, West Georgia is sitting in a solid place with a 4-2 conference record and an overall record of 9-4 on the 2013 season.
West Georgia is coming off of a roller coaster 1-1 week where the Wolves fell to Shorter in midweek action, but came back strong on Friday evening, dispatching Valdosta State 3-2 at The Coliseum. The Blazers came into that matchup with a 5-0 record in GSC play and the Wolves were able to close the gap with the victory.
The Wolves are currently in third place in the GSC this season, one game ahead of Alabama-Huntsville and Christian Brothers, teams that are both 3-3 this year. West Georgia has a daunting task ahead in the next 10 GSC matches, though, as the Wolves will face seven GSC road matches in their final 10.
West Georgia has three players who have reached triple digits in the kills department this season, led by
Emily Reul, who has 181 to her credit. She is third in the GSC in kills per set with 3.42 and leads the conference in service aces with 27. Senior
Lesley Bemis is second on the team with 137 kills and junior
Helen Menchinger has 115. Bemis is averaging 2.63 kills per set and is 10th in the conference.
The senior from Birmingham is also sixth in the GSC standings in blocks per set, averaging 0.73 with a total of 38 blocks on the year.
Tiesha Alston emerged as a threat at the net last weekend, as she had nine block assists against VSU, a record in The Coliseum.
Junior setter
Amanda Miller is tops in the GSC among setters with 10.17 assists per set on the year. She has also led the Wolves to a .224 hitting percentage this season, which is the top team hitting percentage in the conference thus far.
Senior libero
Melissa Holt set a personal best on Friday against VSU with 31 digs in the match. She has 273 digs on the year, leading the conference in overall digs and digs per set with 5.15.
