Wolves set for GSC Tourney Friday

Carrollton, GA - The UWG volleyball squad is hitting its stride at the right time, as the Wolves head into the 2013 postseason this weekend at the Gulf South Conference Tournament as the 3rd overall seed from the regular season standings. The Wolves will play 6th-seeded West Alabama on Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. in the UWF Field House in Pensacola, FL.

West Georgia won its final three matches of the season last weekend, beginning last Tuesday with a 3-1 road victory over West Alabama. The Wolves continued to roll on Friday with a 3-0 win over Christian Brothers on Senior Night, followed by a 3-1 win over Union in the regular season finale on Saturday.

The Wolves finished the regular season with 15-13 record and are assured of finishing with a winning record for the first time since the 2007 season. West Georgia also finished with a school record 10 wins in GSC play for the second straight season.

It was a record-setting year for the Wolves, as a pair of UWG seniors spent the season chasing down the top of the UWG record books. Senior #Melissa Holt# was the only one to reach the top, as she is 17 digs away from 1,500 digs for her career in Carrollton and she is the all-time leader in digs at UWG. She also became just the third player in school history with at least 500 digs in a single season. Holt was named 2nd Team All-GSC earlier this week.

Senior #Emily Reul# was also solid throughout the year and finished the season as one of the top players in multiple categories in school history. Reul was also named Second Team All-GSC earlier this week, marking the second-straight season that she has been named to the All-GSC team.

Senior #Lesley Bemis# also had a second-straight All-GSC performance this season, was second in the GSC in hitting percentage on the year and was named First Team All-Conference earleir this week.

UWG (15-13, 10-8) vs. West Alabama (12-17, 5-13)
This will be the 59th meeting all-time between the two schools, with West Alabama holding a 33-25 lead in the series. West Georgia has won three of the last four meetings, including both battles this season.

The first meeting between the two teams came on October 17, when the Tigers pushed UWG to five sets at The Coliseum in Carrollton. The Wolves took the first and third sets, while UWA won the second and fourth. West Georgia pushed ahead in the final set, winning 15-9. Five different players had double-figure kills in the match, including 15 from Bemis to lead the way for UWG. Holt had a career-high 40 digs in the match, which also set the school record for that category in a single match.

For UWA, Morgan Ray and Yanesha Johnson were the only players in double-figures, with Ray picking up a match-high 18 kills.

In the second meeting last week between the two teams, the Tigers took an early match lead with a 25-20 victory in the first set. But West Georgia won the next three in dramatic style, taking the match 3-1. The Wolves trailed 18-11 in the fourth and final set, coming from behind with a 14-4 run to win the set and the match.
