UWG advances to GSC Championship Game

Carrollton, GA - UWG senior middle hitter #Lesley Bemis# wasn't quite ready to finish out her collegiate career on Saturday afternoon, as the Birmingham, Ala. native powered the Wolves to a 3-2 victory in the Gulf South Conference semifinals over seventh-seed North Alabama with a monstrous offensive effort.

Bemis had a career-high 25 kills on Saturday afternoon at the UWF Field House as the Wolves came back from a 2-1 deficit to reach the GSC Championship match for just the second time in school history. The first came in 2007, when the Wolves won their first Gulf South Conference volleyball championship.

North Alabama, a program with a proud tradition of GSC Championships, came out firing and took advantage of 10 UWG hitting errors in the opening set. West Georgia had 14 kills, but a .091 hitting percentage pushed the Wolves to a 25-21 loss in the first set.

That loss shook loose the cobwebs, as West Georiga ran roughshod over the Lions in the second set with a 25-11 victory. The Wolves had just three hitting errors in the set and took advantage of eight from UNA en route to tying the match at 1-1. In the third set, UWG held a 17-14 lead midway through, but UNA came on strong with an 11-4 run to take a 2-1 lead with another 25-21 victory.

In the fourth set, the Wolves had 22 kills out of the 25 points in the frame, with senior #Emily Reul# putting a pair of kills away to finish off the set at 25-23. Bemis had eight of the Wolves' 22 kills in the set, hitting at a .636 clip to help push the match to a fifth and deciding game.

The final game brought a swift response from West Georgia, as the Wolves built a 12-2 lead and never looked back, finishing off the match with a 15-5 victory. Setter #Amanda Miller#, who had 50 assists in the match, had the final kill to send the Wolves to the championship match Sunday.

Reul was second on the team with 12 kills, followed by #Amanda Miles# with 11. Bemis, in addition to her 25 kills, also had six blocks in the match. #Melissa Holt# had 15 digs to lead the back line along with Reul, who added 10 digs to the tally.

West Georgia will take on top-seed and host West Florida on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the UWF Field House. The match will be streamed live through the tournament link at www.gscsports.org. The winner of the GSC Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA South Regional.
