Carrollton, GA - Five matches remain in the 2013 volleyball season for the West Georgia Wolves, beginning tonight with a tough Gulf South Conference battle with newcomer Lee. That is followed Saturday by the third of four-straight road matches on the schedule as the Wolves take on Valdosta State.
The Flames have been one of the top NAIA volleyball programs in the nation year-in and year-out, but this year Lee is in their first year of transition into Division II. That hasn't slowed them down much, as Lee is 12-6 this season, including an 8-4 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
Tuesday night's match marks the fifth time the two teams have played in the series history, but earlier this year, West Georgia tied the series at two matches each with a 3-1 victory in Carrollton on September 28. In that match,
Lesley Bemis had 12 kills, hitting at a .417 clip to lead the Wolves.
In that match, junior
Helen Menchinger was the second-leading hitter with 10 kills on the afternoon.
Kendall Williams led the way defensively with five blocks and
Melissa Holt had 12 digs.
This season has been one for the record books, with Holt breaking the career record for digs last week at home against West Florida. In addition, the Wolves' libero is close to breaking the single-season record for digs. She currently has 459 and needs 97 to break the school single season record. With an average of 5.16 digs per set on the year, Holt still has a chance to break that record, which was set in a season where the Wolves played four postseason matches.
This weekend, the Wolves have another tough test in the Valdosta State Blazers. VSU comes into the match with eight Gulf South Conference wins and the Blazers sit just ahead of West Georgia in the Gulf South Conference standings.
Match time tonight against Lee is 7 p.m., with Saturday's match against VSU slated for a 1 p.m. start.
