Wolves Take Games Two and Three from ASU

Augusta, GA – The old cliche says that momentum in baseball is all about the next day's starter. That cliche rang true for the UWG baseball squad on Sunday, as the Wolves rebounded from a tough loss on Saturday to win game one 7-3 followed by a 4-3 victory in 11 innings in the nightcap.

In the first game, #Jonathon Black# got the start for the Wolves, his second this season. Black pitched eight and a third innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out seven.

The junior was masterful through the first eight innings and was seemingly on his way to a five-hit shutout before Augusta State's bats woke up in the bottom of the ninth. Meanwhile, the UWG bats came alive in the middle innings, beginning in the third.

#Jake Shirley#, who entered the game in center field in the bottom of the first, opened the inning with a walk. He advanced to second on a groundout from #Blake McLemore#, then scored the first run of the game on an #Evan Hester# single.

In the top of the fourth, #Tyler Landmon# picked up a one-out walk, then promptly stole second. #Keith Borger# singled to second, giving the Wolves runners on first and third. WIth two outs, Shirley reached on an error by the ASU shortstop, allowing Landmon to score. Two batters later, #Dylan Coleman# broke things open with a bases-loaded single, bringing home Borger and Shirley and giving UWG a commanding 4-0 lead.

West Georgia added two more runs in the top of the fifth, giving Black all the cushion he would need. After he gave up two hits in the bottom of the ninth, head coach Skip Fite brought in #Max Aeschlimann# to relieve Black. The senior was solid in his appearance, striking out two to end the game.

Borger was 3-for-5 at the plate in the game with an RBI and a run scored. Coleman and Hester combined for four RBIs and three hits to help boost the Wolves to a game one win. #Trey Dickson# had two hits as well for West Georgia in game one.

Game two for the Wolves was an exciting one as it took 11 innings to decide a winner. If not for the fact that a game scheduled for seven innings took 11, the story of the game was junior starting pitcher #Jamie Sexton#. The righthander was stellar over seven innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters.

But it would be Augusta State that would strike first in this one, scoring a run on a pair of doubles in the bottom of the first. That was the only run that came in the first six innings for ASU, but it was all the Jaguars needed, as the UWG bats went cold, collecting just one hit until the bottom of the sixth inning.

In that frame, Shirley again led off with a walk, followed by an infield single from McLemore. Coleman singled to the shortstop and Shirley came around to score the tying run with McLemore advancing to third. Hester picked up his third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead and the Jaguars just six outs to work with.

Sexton made ASU nervous in the bottom of the sixth, striking out two of the three batters and sitting the Jags down in order. The Wolves picked up a hit in the top of the seventh, but didn't threaten to score. Augusta State scored a run on two hits in the bottom of the seventh, forcing the extra-inning affair.

Aeschilmann came in to relieve Sexton in the eighth, striking out two batters to end any hopes of an eighth inning win for ASU. In the ninth, the Wolves scored a run on a Shirley single to left-center that brought home Landmon. But ASU was equal to that, scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth to continue the game.

The two teams were scoreless in the 10th, with #Alex Allen# working the inning for the first two outs before Fite brought #Randall Wright# in to pitch. Wright induced a fly-out, sending the game to the 11th.

Landmon started the final rally with a one-out single to left, followed by a sacrifice from Dickson. Shirley reached on an error, advancing Landmon to third and McLemore brought home the winning run with a single to left. Wright sat the Jags down in order in the bottom of the inning to take the victory.

The winning connection of Landmon and McLemore were the offensive heroes of the second game, as McLemore was 3-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI. Landmon was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Wright picked up the win, his second on the season in his third appearance.

West Georgia moves to 5-2 on the season now. The Wolves will play host to Lynn on February 16 and 17 for a three game series in Carrollton. The first game is scheduled for 12:30 pm on Saturday.

Notable ...
Wright now has 51 career appearances for the Wolves, 17 shy of Chuck Robinson's record of 68 ... Sexton has the team's best ERA among starting pitchers at 1.87 ... the junior has 15 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched and has yet to walk a batter ... UWG pitchers have had solid command of the strike zone this season thus far, striking out 56 batters and walking on 19 ... Coleman took the RBI lead over the weekend and now has eight on the year, one ahead of Hester's seven ... Freshman #John-Mark Rhodes# is becoming quite the stolen base threat and has four on the season ... the newcomer is batting a solid .292 with three runs scored.
