Carrollton, GA - After a thrilling weekend at Cole Field where the Wolves swept Paine College, UWG now focuses their attention on a tough Peach Belt opponent in GCSU. The game was scheduled to be played in Milledgeville but due to the weather conditions the game has been moved to Carrollton at 3:00 p.m.
GCSU at a Glance
GCSU has started 7-5 and they have struggled on the road with a record of 1-5. Head Coach Tom Carty, is in his fifth season with the Bobcats, and is looking to get his team winning on a consistent basis. Carty will look for his team to get off to an early start knowing that his team is nearly perfect record of 7-1, when leading after six innings.
UWG at a Glance
West Georgia baseball is off to a sizzling 9-4 start, and 7-2 at home. Head Coach
Skip Fite is excited to play the Bobcats and get on a three game winning streak headed into conference play. Coach Fite also has a similar strategy as Coach Carty, as he wants to get his team off to an early start. The Wovles are 9-0 on the year when leading after six innings. UWG has also outscored their opponents 92-66 on the year.
GCSU Batters to Watch
The Bobcats can definitely put the bat on the ball. Their team is batting .358 on the year with 9 home runs and 106 RBIs on the year. Leadoff man and second baseman Ryan Sabalaskey is a key component to their offense. Sabalaskey is batting .425 on the year, and also has stolen six bases in eight attempts. Another big bat for UWG to look out for is catcher Cody Maas. Maas has a slugging percentage of .609 on the year with two home runs and has also driven in 20 runs.
UWG Batters to Watch
GCSU pitchers should look out for senior #
Evan Hester# and junior #
Blake McLemore#. McLemore has played in all 13 games and is hitting just under .400 for the Wolves, which leads the team. Hester, who has been behind the plate most of the year for the UWG, has a slugging percentage of .500 with six doubles on the year. Hester also shows patience at the plate tied with #
Dylan Coleman# for the most walks on the year. When the Wolves get on base, look for them to be aggressive; they have stolen 29 bases on the year.
GCSU Pitchers to Watch
West Georgia will likely see John Clark or Matt LaMothe on the mound this Wednesday. Clark has looked solid pitching this year for the Bobcats. He is 2-0 on the year, and his last game he picked up the win against Flagler pitching eight innings and striking out four. Pitching around trouble Clark allowed twelve hits and has allowed 19 hits through 16 innings of work. LaMothe may be another pitcher the Wolves see who has an ERA of 4.81 but has 29 strikeouts on the year.
UWG Pitchers to Watch
For this mid-week matchup, Coach Skip will likely look for some work out of the bullpen. For the game Wednesday, expect to see junior pitchers #
Jonathon Black# and #
Cody Skinner# on the mound. Black has been hot and cold on the year striking out ten players, but also walking eleven. Black's best game this year came at home against Augusta State. Black went eight innings only allowing three runs in his last inning of work. The Bobcats will also likely see Skinner on the mound who has five appearances on the year and has a nine to three strikeout to walk ratio.
Last Matchup
Last year this matchup did not fare well for UWG. The Wolves played GSCU in two games losing both of them. West Georgia lost the first game after getting behind by too many runs early in the game. The Wolves' pitching staff surrendered seven runs in the first two innings off of a total of nine hits. UWG went on to score six runs after the fifth inning, but it was a little too late losing the game 10-7. The Wolves second game started a little different but ended with the same result. West Georgia's hopes were high when they scored three runs in the first inning. However, GCSU answered with three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh winning the game 5-4.
