Conference Play to Kick off This Weekend

Carrollton, GA- UWG baseball is excited to conference play going this weekend against Christian Brothers. UWG currently has a record of 10-4 on the year. UWG will be playing at home in a three game series which begins Saturday, March 2, with a doubleheader at 1:00PM. The Wolves will wrap up the last game on Sunday at 1:00PM.

Last year, the Wolves went 9-13 in conference play. UWG baseball has improved each season in conference play since the 2010 season. Coach Fite hopes to continue the improving record this year, and to get off to a positive start against CBU.

CBU at a Glance
Head Coach Phil Goodwin and the Bucs are 4-7 on the year. Goodwin will be trying to get his team back on track as they head to Cole Field. Christian Brothers have not played an away game this year, and they will have to take on the West Georgia Wolves who are 8-2 at home this year.

UWG at a Glance
West Georgia is playing exceptional baseball thus far. They are currently on a three game winning streak after taking down a tough North Georgia team at home 8-1. “The team is playing well as a whole”, coach Fite stated. “It's not just about one person; we have major team chemistry right now.”

CBU Batters to Watch
Junior Josh Hopkins has been the biggest threat for the Bucs this year. Hopkins leads the team with a .484 batting average and also leads the team with a .581 slugging percentage. Jarrett Jenkins is also a guy the Wolves should keep their eye on. Jenkins has scored the most runs for CBU touching the plate ten times on the year and is also 5-for-6 on stolen base attempts.

UWG Batters to Watch
The most obvious batters to look out for this weekend will probably be #Blake McLemore#, who leads the team in batting average, and senior #Evan Hester#. #Shaquille Jackson# picked up West Georgia's first RBI against Georgia College in his first game back since his injury. Jackson also is batting .481 through seven games with six stolen bases. Another guy who has been crushing the ball is #TJ Eifert#. Eifert picked up two doubles in the game in the last game against Georgia College and leads the team with nine on the year.

CBU Pitchers to Watch
In game one, West Georgia will likely match up against starting pitcher Alex Sikes. Sikes has been CBU's go to guy this year. He is 2-1 on the year and has an ERA of 5.30 which leads the team. The second starter to guy to look out for is Mac Cooley. Cooley is 1-2 on the year with six strikeouts through eleven innings. Starting pitching has been anything but perfect for the Bucs, but their bullpen has been a little better. Jack Parker is one of those dangerous pitchers out of the bullpen recording eleven strikeouts in just nine innings.

UWG Pitchers to Watch
Expect to see #Chase Riemer# on the mound the weekend. Riemer is 3-1 on the year and has a 2.42 ERA. The senior has seen a lot of success on the mound striking out 25 batters on the year and only allowing two extra base hits on the year. #Jamie Sexton# is another guy to look out for. Sexton has an incredible 1.47 ERA this year and an amazing 29 to 3 strikeout to walk ratio.

Last Matchup
Last year the Wolves also opened GSC play against Christian Brothers. The Wolves snuck one by CBU in the first game scoring on an error by the Bucs catcher in the bottom of ninth to win the game. However games, two and three were blowout wins for the Wolves. UWG won the second game 6-1, and then went on to win the series finale 22-0.
