Wolves Baseball Weekend Preview: Augusta State

Carrollton, GA- After a tough loss to Columbus State, the Wolves now turn their attention to the Augusta State Jaguars. The first game is Saturday, February 9, at 2:00 PM in Augusta. Sunday is a doubleheader with the first pitch being thrown out at 1:00 p.m.

Augusta State at a Glance
The Augusta State Jaguars played some tough baseball last weekend, beating Carson-Newman in 2 out of 3 games. Head coach Chris Cooper is now in his fourth year and looking for his first winning season. Last year the Jags record was 13-37 and at one point they lost eight straight games. Augusta State has eight returning starters this season and they are looking to turn around their bad fortunes.

UWG at a Glance
The Wolves currently sit at 3-1 on the year and are looking to get back on track after a loss on the road to Columbus State. Coach Fite and the team believe this weekend series could potentially be a great series to continue their early success.

Augusta State Batters to Watch
Although the Jaguars have only played three games, they have one player that is standing out above the rest. In 2011, Jeff Smith led the Jaguars offensively as a freshman, hitting .315 with two home runs and 24 RBI in 49 starts. This year he has shown much of the same passion from the plate. He is batting .545 through 11 at bats, two of which were doubles. Another big bat and a player who could potentially have a big game is Nate Crown. Crown leads the team in RBI with 3 on the season and also has two doubles.

UWG Batters to Watch
The Wolves currently have three starters who are all batting over .300. At the top of the list is #Shaquille Jackson#, who is hitting .611 through the first four games. He has the most total bases on the team with 13 and has also scored the most runs with nine. Behind him is shortstop #Dylan Coleman#. Coleman belted the Wolves first home run in the last game against Columbus State. He is batting .500 with five RBI. Third in batting average is Evan Hester. Hester is batting .462 with two doubles and four walks.

Augusta State Pitchers to Watch
West Georgia should definitely look out for the junior right handed pitcher Clint Echols. Echols was in the bullpen last year but still had a 1.80 ERA. This year he started one game pitching 6 innings and only giving up one earned run. One player out of the bullpen to keep your eye on is senior righty Dylan Wall. Wall has pitched three innings and has four strike outs.

UWG Pitchers to Watch
The Wolves pitching staff has some big time players who can throw the ball. Augusta State should look out for Chase Reimer as well as Jamie Sexton. Reimer pitched five innings in his first start striking out 5 and only giving up one run. Sexton pitched eight innings in his first appearance only giving up two runs in the game. If the game comes down to the wire look for Alex Allen to enter the game to secure the win. Allen has one save on the year, but has made three different appearances. Allen has pitched two total innings thus far racking up 3 strikeouts.

Last Year
Last year the Wolves won 2 out of the 3 games against the Jags. They won the first two games pretty handedly outscoring their opponent 18-7. The final game was a tough loss for the Wolves falling 5-4 to the Jaguars. The Wolves put up two runs in the seventh, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Reliever Tyler Ross worked out of a two-on, one-out jam and earned his first save of the season.
