Wolves Drop Game One to Augusta State

Carrollton, GA - The UWG baseball squad suffered their second loss of the season against the Augusta State Jaguars at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

West Georgia got on the scoreboard first in the game in the second inning. The inning led off with a single from #TJ Eifert#. #Blake McLemore# then moved Eifert over with a sacrifice bunt. Freshman #John Mark Rhodes# followed him with a double down the left field line to score Eifert from second base. However, the rally ended when #Cameron Eison# lined into a double-play with runners on second and third with one out.

ASU senior Seth Foster singled to start the second inning, and then junior Jeff Rice was hit by a pitch. Freshman Justin Mee reached on a fielder's choice, putting Foster out at third and bringing up juniors Kevin Dodson and JD Sabo. The two hit back-to-back singles that went over Harrison Waller's head to give the Jags a 2-1 lead.

The Jaguars added two more runs in the fifth when junior transfer Nate Crown walked with two outs, and freshman Hunter Boose doubled off the left-field wall to score Crown from first. An error at third base scored Boose from second for a 4-1 ASU lead.

Junior righty Cody Skinner came on in relief for the Wolves in the sixth, but struggled against the Jags this afternoon. Second baseman Rice introduced him to the game with a single. Dodson doubled to score Rice and a base-hit bunt from Sabo put runners on first and third. Freshman Lance Mangrum hit into a fielder's choice that scored Dodson giving ASU a 6-1 lead.

The Wolves tried to get a late inning rally together in the eighth inning down 6-1, but only could come up with one run. In the eighth, Dylan Coleman doubled to left field with one out. Evan Hester then came up and singled to the pitcher. Coleman advanced to the third, then scored after a throwing error from the pitcher making the score 6-2. TJ Eifert then came up and grounded into a double play to end the inning and the Wolves threat.

The final score of the game was 7-2 with Augusta State coming out on top. West Georgia hitters struggled with left-hander Kip Custer who went 7.0 innings and only gave up one earned run. Custer now moves to 2-0 on the year.

West Georgia will have a chance for redemption tomorrow at Lake Olmstead Stadium for a series ending double header starting at 1 p.m.
