UWG takes series over Shorter

Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia hosted the final game of this weekend's series at Cole Field Sunday afternoon against Shorter College. The Wolves were dominant on Sunday from start to finish, picking up the series victory with a 7-0 win.

#Jamie Sexton# had another day at the office, going the route against the Shorter ace to preserve a 2-1 weekend against Shorter. The 6-1 sophomore pitched his fourth complete game of the season, improving his record to 5-1 on the year. The righthander only surrendered four hits and one walk in just 90 pitches. He also had six strikeouts, which brings his season total to 47.

"Today was a total team effort," Sexton said. "I just threw what the coaches and Galen (Smith) were calling for me and my hitters got the job done, which was just what we needed."

After struggling at the plate on Saturday, the Wolves hit the Hawks ace pitcher very well. Before the game, the 6'6” righty Stuart Charleston had a 1.99ERA and was 3-2 on the year. However, the Wolves were able to shake him up in the game and rack up seven runs on thirteen hits.

The Wolves gave Sexton all he would need in the bottom of the second inning, as #Blake McLemore# led off the inning with a double. He moved to third on a groundout from #TJ Eifert#, then scored on a failed pickoff attempt at first. That was one of two runs scored by McLemore on the afternoon, as the Wolves added two in the sixth, one in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to close the scoring.

Top performers at the plate from today's game were #Blake McLemore# and #TJ Eifert#. Both batters went 3-for-4 from the plate. McLemore scored two of the seven runs in the game, and Eifert drove in two runs.

Eifert also played third base in the game this afternoon and showed off his glove. He had five assists at the hot corner, one of which came when he bare-handed a ball that was bunted and threw out the runner going to first off an unbalanced throw.

Sexton and #Chase Riemer# both move to 5-1 in on the year after winning their games this weekend. The Wolves are now 17-8 on the year and are 6-3 in conference play. UWG will have one day off before they head out to Hartsville, South Carolina to take on Coker College.
