Baseball Weekend Preview

Carrollton, GA – The University of West Georgia baseball team heads to Jackson, Tennessee to take on conference opponent Union University this weekend.

This is the first time in recent memory the Wolves have matched up against the team from Jackson. The series will begin this Saturday, March 23, with a doubleheader. The first game starts at 2:00PM, with the second game followed shortly after. The series will wrap up with a game on Sunday beginning at 1:00PM.

Union at a Glance
The Union Bulldogs are having a subpar season thus far with a 5-15 record under head coach Brent Fronabarger and are also only 1-8 in conference. Majority of the Union's losses came in the month of March when they went on a ten game losing streak. However, Union did take down the University of West Florida who was the number six team in the NCAA on March 17. Union University also won their last game against Blue Mountain College and is currently on a two game winning streak.

UWG at a Glance
The University of West Georgia will try to get back on track this weekend after losing both games earlier this week against Coker College. The team currently has a 17-10 overall record and they are 6-3 in the conference. A portion of UWG's success this season has come from their ability to play small ball, advancing runners on the base path by sacrifice bunts. In fact, the Wolves are tied for tenth in sacrifice bunts in the NCAA Division II rankings.

Union Batters to Watch
Union has not been that productive at the plate with a team batting average of only .235 on the year. The Bulldogs most dangerous batter this season has been the first baseman Jim Martin. Martin has showed maturity for only being a sophomore this year leading the team in batting with a .329 average. Martin is leading in every batting statistical category besides triples. He has six doubles, three home runs and 14 RBIs. The Bulldogs second most dangerous hitter this year has been Cole McAdams hitting .274 on the year with five doubles and six RBIs.
UWG Batters to Watch
The Wolves continue to raise their team batting average the past couple of weeks and are up to .298 on the year. #Blake McLemore# has continued to contribute to the teams scoring efforts leading the team in runs scored and he also leads the team in sacrifice bunts with seven this year. #Evan Hester# also continues to succeed at the plate batting .327 this year with 13 doubles and 22 RBI. #TJ Eifert# is also contributing to the team having also driven in 22 runners.

Union Pitchers to Watch
The Bulldogs pitching has not been much better than their hitting this year. The team's ERA is only 4.34, and they have surrendered 95 runs in just 150 innings pitched. Two pitchers the Wolves will likely see this weekend are Jared Davis and Derek Roof. Davis is 0-4 on the year, but has pitched most innings with 29 for the Bulldogs this year. He has a 22-12 strikeout to walk ration so far, and opponents are hitting just under .300 against him this year. Roof is another guy who has put in a lot of work on the mound for the team this year. He has pitched 25 innings is 1-3 on the season. Roof has eleven walks to just ten strikeouts this year as he pitches to contact and lets his defense do the work. Opponents are hitting .242 against him this year.

UWG Pitchers to Watch
This weekend the pitching rotation will likely go something like this: #Chase Riemer# in game one, #Randall Wright# in game two, and #Jamie Sexton# in the final game on Sunday. Sexton is 5-1 this year with a 1.09 ERA. He has been the most dominant pitcher on the team striking out 47 batters and only walking six. Riemer is also 5-1 on the year thus far and has a 2.58 ERA. Opponents are only hitting .232 against him and he has also picked up 42 strikeouts on the year.
