UWG gets final day split in baseball

Carrollton, GA – UWG wrapped up the three game series in Valdosta, GA against the Blazers today in a doubleheader. Today the Wolves lost game one 5-1, but they got their revenge as they were on the winning side of the second game with a final score of 6-1.

Head Coach Skip Fite gave the start to #Jamie Sexton# on the mound today. Sexton was solid, giving up four runs in seven innings of work, but his offense provided little run support, as the Wolves managed just one run in the nine-inning affair. The loss was just the second of the year for Sexton.

The game was quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Sexton gave up three runs off of two hits, and once the Blazers had the lead they did not look back. The Blazers scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh and another in the bottom of the eight off of relief pitcher #Alex Allen#.
 
The Wolves did score a late run in the top of ninth off the bat of #Shaquille Jackson# Jackson doubled down the right field line scoring #Tyler Landmon#.

Starting pitcher for Valdosta State Peter Whittingslow pitched a complete game, giving up one run and only two hits. Whittnglsow also struck out eleven West Georgia batters and did not surrender a walk.

#Cody Skinner# started on the mound in game two with one of his most productive outings of the 2013 season. He pitched the complete seven inning game, only surrendering one run off of six hits. Skinner struck out three batters and showed great command of his pitches, not walking a batter in the game.

The Wolves got off to a great start in the game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. It started when #Blake McLemore# doubled down the left field line, scoring #Dylan Coleman# and #Shaquille Jackson#.

The Wolves tacked on two more runs in the second inning, extending their lead to 5-0. In the inning, #Jake Shirley# came into score off an RBI from #Blake McLemore#. Several pitches later, #Dylan Coleman# came into score off a throwing error.

Valdosta State scored their first run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Bryant Hayman singled up the middle picking up a RBI. UWG added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth when McLemore came into score off the bat of #Keith Borger#.

Coleman, Jackson and McLemore each had two hits over the course of the two games, with Jackson and McLemore each scoring two runs. McLemore led the way with three RBI. 

The University of West Georgia baseball team now moves to 19-14 on the year and are 8-6 in conference play. Their next game is this Wednesday in a double header against North Georgia.
