Wolves upend 11th-ranked Chargers

Carrollton, GA - The UWG pitching staff rose to the occasion in a big way Saturday afternoon at Cole Field, as three pitchers turned in a performance that will go down as potentially one of the best in school history with a pair of victories over 11th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville. The Wolves won the opener 3-0 followed by a thrilling 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Chargers came into the weekend not only ranked near the top-10 in the nation, but also sporting a near .350 team batting average. UAH had recently swept two straight GSC series, including a sweep of national power West Florida while the Wolves had lost four of their last six in conference play. In addition, the Wolves have been bitten by the injury bug all season, which had everything potentially pointing to a tough weekend for West Georgia.

But no one told #Jamie Sexton#, #Max Aeschillmann# and #Cody Skinner#. The trio combined to toss 14.2 shutout innings before UAH scored on the day, but the only runs the Chargers scored on the day were of the unearned variety.

Head coach Skip Fite went with his ace in Game 1, handing the ball to Sexton. He once again had a dominant performance on the hill, pitching eight innings while allowing no runs and just three hits against the fifth ranked offense in the Division II baseball.

The Wolves got on the board pretty quickly when #TJ Eifert# picked up an RBI off of a sacrifice fly to center field scoring #Blake McLemore# in the bottom of the third inning.

The UWG lineup gave Sexton two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. The first run came when catcher #Evan Hester# picked up an RBI that scored #Shaquille Jackson# when UAH committed a throwing error. The second came shortly after that when McLemore scored up his second run of the game off of a throwing error by their center fielder.

McLemore continued to show how versatile he is out in the field by playing second base today. He has now played every position in the infield this season. In the top of the sixth inning, he cut off a ground ball going into right field and gunned out a runner who tried to advance from first to third on the hit.

#Max Aeschlimann# came into the game in the top of the ninth inning in relief of Sexton and picked up the save and sealed the victory by allowing no runs and one hit to give the Chargers four for the game.

McLemore and Jackson each had two hits on the day, with McLemore scoring two runs and Jackson scoring the third. The Wolves had six hits on the day, with Hester and #Keith Borger# each a hit in the game.

The Wolves' faithful were thrilled to beat the Chargers in game one, but apparently business was not over.

Skinner took the hill for the Wolves in the seven-inning second game. Skinner was impressive, pitching a complete game and allowing only two runs to score, although both runs were unearned.

Once again, UWG got on the scoreboard first when #Jake Shirley# worked his way around after being hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a wild pitch, then advanced to third on a groundout from McLemore. He scored off of a wild pitch, making the game 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

Shirley stayed involved in the action in the third inning when he drove in #Tyler Landmon# off of a single to left center. The Wolves also added their third straight run in the bottom of the fifth when McLemore reached base on a fielder's choice and scored Jackson all the way from second base as Jackson was hustling all the way.

The Chargers finally scored in the top of the sixth inning, breaking a 14.2 inning scoreless streak.

However, it did not faze Skinner as he came out to close the game in the bottom of the seventh. Skinner got into a bit of trouble in the inning after he hit the first batter, followed by a bunt single down the first base line. Skinner then struck out UAH cleanup hitter Connor McCain looking, induced a pop up to first and then struck out Chase Handley to end the game.

Skinner's line for the day was solid, scattering 10 hits over seven innings in his complete game win. He allowed two runs with none earned, struck out five and walked none.

These Wolves move to 22-18 overall this season and 11-8 in Gulf South Conference play, marking the most wins in GSC action for UWG in 10 years, as the last time the Wolves had eleven conference wins in a season was all the way back in 2003, when the then-Braves went 12-9.

The final game of the series will be played Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Cole Field.
