UWG Drops Two to Top-Ranked DSU

Cleveland, MS – The UWG Baseball squad traveled to face the #1-ranked team in the nation, Delta State, on Saturday. The Wolves lost the first game 7-1 and then lost an extra inning battle 3-2.

The Wolves jumped out in front to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a #Blake McLemore# fielder's choice scored #Shaquille Jackson#. This eventually would be the only run West Georgia scored in the game.  Delta State would score two in the first, four in the fourth and one in the fifth to seal the deal.

West Georgia actually out hit the Statesmen 12 to 11 in the first matchup. #TJ Eifert# and #Evan Hester# combined for six of the team's hits. #John-Mark Rhodes# contributed as well for two hits.

#Jamie Sexton got the start for the Wolves in game one. Sexton pitched three and two-thirds innings and gave up five hits and four earned runs. #Clint Beland# relieved Sexton in the fourth and finished out the game giving up six hits but zero earned runs while striking out two.

In game two, Delta State jumped out in the early lead scoring one run in each of the first two innings. West Georgia answered in the top of the third. #Dylan Coleman# drove in #Keith Borger# and Eifert on a double to right-center.

#Cody Skinner# received the start in game two. Skinner pitched seven innings giving up seven hits and only two earned runs while striking out three. #Randal Wright# came in to pitch the extra inning eighth where eventually the Statesmen would score their game-winning run to sweep day one.

The Wolves were led offensively by Hester and Coleman who had two hits each in game two. McLemore, Eifert, Rhodes and Borger each had hits as well.

Game three will start at 3pm tomorrow.
