Carrollton, GA – The University of West Georgia took on the 24th-ranked West Florida Argonauts in a doubleheader today and split the series. The Wolves won the first game in a final of 7-2, but then fell in the second game 14-0.
Head Coach
Skip Fite went with #
Jamie Sexton# to start in game one of the series. Sexton continued to display his excellence in the game pitching his sixth complete game of the year and improving his overall record to 7-2.
The game was an all-out pitchers duel until the Argonauts scored first in the top of the sixth inning. D. Prichard doubled to right center scoring two runs off of Sexton, and he gave UWF a 2-0 lead.
However, the Wolves offense was right there to answer back. In the bottom of the sixth, the Wolves battled back and scored four runs. It started when #
Keith Borger# came up to the plate with bases loaded and his swing was interfered with by the catcher and #
Jake Shirley# came into score. #
Cody Skinner# then picked up his firs RBI of his career at West Georgia and the second RBI of the game to tie it up 2-2.
#
Seth McClure# and #
Tyler Landmon# also picked up RBIs in the inning to extend the Wolves lead to 4-2.
Sexton did not need any more insurance than that as he went on to shut down West Florida and did not allow another run.
McClure picked up two more RBIs in the bottom of the seventh when he singled through the right side first scoring #
John Mark Rhodes# then scoring #
Evan Hester#.
The Wolves won the game in a final score of 7-2. Sexton pitched the complete game throwing 120 pitches and striking out four batters.
The second game wasn't as kind to the Wolves as the first game was as they fell 14-0. Coach Fite went with #
Cody Skinner# to start on the mound, and Skinner got roughed up early in the game.
Skinner picked up his fourth loss of the year as he went 1.1 innings giving up five runs off of seven hits.
The Argonauts scored early in the top of the first inning when K. Barlow doubled to center field over Shirley's head scoring D. Saulmon.
West Florida added to their lead in the top of the second when St. Hilaire homered to left center field picking up three RBIs. Barlow then doubled down the left field line scoring another run and extended their lead to 5-0.
#
Jonathon Black# came into the game in relief for Skinner and pitched 4.2 innings. He didn't have too much luck in the game either. Black also allowed five earned runs off of eight hits and surrendered a solo homerun to C. Covington in the top of the fifth.
UWF scored four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, and two more in the seventh to take down the Wolves 14-0.
West Georgia moves to 20-16 overall and 9-7 in conference play. UWG will try and win the series against West Florida tomorrow at 1:00PM at Cole Field.
