Carrollton, GA - The UWG baseball team made it three in a row against Alabama-Huntsville this afternoon, taking down the second-seeded Chargers on the opening day of the 2013 Taziki's Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament by a 2-1 count at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, TN.
As most could predict, this one was a solid pitcher's duel, as West Georgia's First Team All-GSC hurler #
Jamie Sexton# outdueled Alabama-Huntsville's First Team All-GSC pitcher #Andrew Busby#. It was the third straight game between the two teams where neither team scored more than three runs.
Sexton tossed 6.1 shutout innings in the game to collect his ninth win of the season while Busby went the route, allowing just two runs on 11 UWG hits. Sexton allowed five hits in his time on the mound, struck out five and walked three, then #Max Aeschilmann# came on in the seventh, induced an inning-ending double-play and then allowed a run on two hits to close out the game and pick up his eighth save of the season.
UAH looked as though they might break through for the first run of the game in the bottom of the second, as Jud Sherrill singled with one out and Chase Handley reached on a fielder's cholce that turned into an error at second base. But Sexton induced a double-play that ended the threat and kept the score at 0-0.
The fourth would mark the first scoring inning of the contest, as West Georgia shortstop #TJ EIfert# led off the inning with a single, the catcher #
Evan Hester# gave the Wolves runners on first and second with a bunt single. Two batters later, #John-Mark Rhodes# singled to center, scoring Eifert and giving the Wolves a 1-0 advantage.
In the fifth, West Georgia would give its pitching staff all it would need, as #
Tyler Landmon# led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from #
Shaquille Jackson#, then scored three batters later on an Eifert single to give West Georgia a 2-0 lead.
Sexton struck out three batters over the next two innings, holding the Chargers scoreless. But UAH put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the seventh with one out, forcing head coach
Skip Fite to go to his bullpen. Aeschilmann threw five pitches, with the fifth inducing the double-play to end the inning on a 2-2 count. The Chargers put a run on the board in the eighth, but Aeschilmann sat UAH down in order in the ninth to preserve the win.
For West Georgia, the win was the second in the past two seasons and marked the second year in a row that the Wolves have started the GSC Tournament with a victory. Sexton moves to 9-4 on the season while Busby falls to 6-4 on the year.
The Wolves will move into the winner's bracket and will face-off with 6th-seed West Alabama on Friday at noon.
