Wolves eliminate North Alabama in GSC Tourney retu

Carrollton, GA - The 2013 Gulf South Conference Tournament restarted Monday after a Sunday hiatus and a venue to change to Cole Field in Carrollton. The University of West Georgia, now hosts of this year's tournament, took down North Alabama in the first game back Monday afternoon.

The Wolves and Lions were facing off in an elimination game, with the winner continuing on in this year's tournament and the loser heading home. The story of the game was the UWG pitching that tossed nine shutout innings to take the victory.

"I couldn't be more proud of the effort that we had today from our pitching staff," said head coach Skip Fite. "But more importantly, our guys are out there having fun and playing good baseball right now."

Fite chose to rest staff ace #Jamie Sexton# on Monday and gave the ball to senior #Seth McClure#, who turned in one of his top performances in two years at West Georgia. McClure threw 6.2 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three hits, including two in the third. The senior struck out two batters and walked one, but left with the score tied at 0-0 in the seventh.

North Alabama starter Cade Medley was equally as good, dueling McClure pitch-for-pitch for the first six innings, then continuing against UWG closer #Max Aeschilmann# in the seventh. In that inning, Aeschilmann came in and got the Wolves out of a jam and then closed out the game for his first win of the year.

The UWG offense finally broke through against Medley in the bottom of the eighth, beginning with #Blake McLemore#, who started the rally with a two-out walk, then he stole second. One pitch later, #TJ Eifert# tripled to right field, scoring McLemore with the go-ahead run. In the next at-bat, #Evan Hester# singled, bringing home Eifert to five a two-run cushion to Aeschilmann.

The senior opened the top of the ninth by hitting a UNA batter, but that was quickly erased by a line-out double play to Eifert at shortstop. North Alabama second baseman Josh Carpenter hit the first pitch of his at-bat on the nose, but it was right at center fielder #Shaquille Jackson#, ending the game and extending the Wolves' season.

Eifert and Hester were each 2-for-4 in the game, with each driving in one run for the Wolves' offensive. Aeschilmann worked 2.1 hitless innings to finish the game and pick up the win, striking out one batter.

West Georgia will now await the Valdosta State Blazers, who have won two games and were scheduled to be up against West Alabama Monday night, but that game has been postponed due to more rain in Carrollton. The game will either be in the late afternoon on Tuesday or the first game of the day on Wednesday.
