Carrollton, GA - The 2013 UWG baseball season came to a close Thursday afternoon at Cole Field, as a "Cinderella" run from the West Georgia Wolves ended on the final day of the Gulf South Conference Tournament with a loss to top-seed Delta State, 12-1.
The Wolves, who entered this year's tourney as the seventh seed, rode a wave of solid pitching and timely hitting through the entire tournament. But against DSU, the Wolves ran into a squad that hit .361 through six games at the GSC tourney with a 2.58 ERA. Despite that, West Georgia looked up to the challenge early on Thursday.
Through the first two innings, UWG held a 1-0 lead and belted out three hits, putting up a solid fight against a team that spent the entire season among the top-5 in the nation. But in the next three innings, Delta State scored nine runs and essentially put the game away, eventually putting up 12 runs on 19 hits against the UWG pitching staff.
#
Shaquille Jackson#, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored on the day, opened the game for West Georgia in the bottom of the first, leading off with a single up the middle. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from #
Blake McLemore#, then advanced to third on a single from #TJ EIfert#. The next batter was catcher #
Evan Hester#, who grounded to short, but the senior turned on the afterburners and beat the throw, allowing Jackson to score for a 1-0 lead for UWG.
UWG starter #
Cody Skinner# allowed just one hit through the first two innings, but in the second time through the order, the Statesmen bats turned on, scoring three runs on four hits in the third inning.
Three Wolves were named to the All-Tournament team, including West Georgia pitchers #
Jamie Sexton# and #Max Aeschilmann# along with Eifert, the UWG shortstop. Sexton was 2-0, going 13.1 innings with a 1.35 ERA at this year's tourney, striking out nine batters and walking three. Aeschilmann threw seven innings in three appearances with a 1.29 ERA, a 1-0 record and two saves. Eifert was 6-for-17 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI.
West Georgia closes the season with a 27-24 record overall, marking the most wins in a season since the 2008 season. The Wolves' 12-12 record was the most wins in GSC play for UWG since 2001 and the three GSC tournament victories were second-most all-time for a UWG baseall team.
The Wolves also had their first 10-game winner in the past 10 years in #
Jamie Sexton# and senior #Max Aeschilmann# set a school record for saves with nine on the year. Senior #
