Women's Volleyball UWG Athletics

Wolves sweep Saturday Tri-Match

Carrollton, GA - The UWG women's volleyball team traveled to Milledgeville, GA on Saturday to take on a pair of Peach Belt Conference foes. The Wolves took on the Cougars of Columbus State in the early match and earned a 3-1 victory, then finished the sweep of the day in the afternoon with a 3-2 victory over Georgia College.

The Wolves came out attacking and took the first set 25-15 before dropping the second set 25-20, where they would have just a .156 hitting percentage. In the third set, the Wolves would bounce back and have an impressive .514 hitting percentage with zero errors putting the Cougars on their heels.

UWG would finish off the Cougars in the fourth set 25-19 to take the match, 3-1. #Helen Menchinger# would lead the Wolves with 15 kills and a .519 hitting percentage. Senior #Emily Reul# would add 13 kills on the match.

Senior libero #Melissa Holt# led the Wolves with 15 digs. #Amanda Miller# would add 40 assists in the contest.

In the nightcap, the Wolves took on host Georgia College and the Bobcats took UWG to the fifth set before West Georgia finished off their fifth victory of the season with a 3-2 win.

The Wolves hit .274 in the second game of the day and were led by Reul, junior #Amanda Miles# and fellow senior #Lesley Bemis#. Reul had her first 20-kill match of the season and hit .340 in the match, committing just four errors in 47 attempts for a .340 hitting percentage.

Miles had 15 kills in 32 attempts with just three errors, hitting .375 for the match, while Bemis had 14 kills in 26 attempts with no errors and a .538 hitting percentage. #Amanda Miller# had 51 assists in the game, a season-high, and she also had 12 digs. Holt led the team with 18 digs, followed by Reul with 15, #Drea Matthews# with 14. Bemis was also solid on the block with five in the match.

Georgia College took the first set 25-19, then West Georgia bounced back with a 25-17 win in the second. The Bobcats took the third set 25-22 followed by a solid 25-13 victory in the fourth set.

In the fifth set, the Wolves looked to be on the road to a loss to Georgia College, as the Bobcats had three straight match points after taking a 14-11 advantage. Reul got things on track with a kill to make the score 14-12, then Bemis added three straight kills to give West Georgia a 15-14 lead. The two teams traded points from there out, going into extra points before UWG won, 21-19 to take the match.

The Wolves move to 5-2 on the year heading into Gulf South Conference play next weekend. West Georgia hosts North Alabama on Friday evening at 6 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. match with Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday.
