Carrollton, GA - The first weekend of Gulf South Conference volleyball is in the books, and the UWG squad is hitting on all cylinders, finishing off a two-game sweep of the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Alabama Huntsville Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum.
The Wolves came into the weekend with a 5-2 record on the year, and their GSC schedule began with traditional league power North Alabama on Friday night followed by a rematch from the first round of the 2012 conference tournament and Alabama Huntsville. The Chargers put third-seeded UWG out of last year's postseason in that match.
West Georgia came out swinging in the first set, collecting 19 kills in 25 points with a .317 hitting percentage. The Wolves jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and never looked back, with senior #Lesley Bemis# blasting two straight kills to end the set 25-20.
In the second set, the Wolves led for much of the first half of the set, but the Chargers came back to tie the game at 18-18. The two teams battled for the remainder of the game, with UAH coming out of top 27-25 to tie the match a 1-1.
In the third set, West Georgia trailed 13-12 when Bemis came through with a kill. Junior #Samantha Drane# came to the serving line and stayed there for seven straight serves as the Wolves took an 18-13 advantage. Of the six points, senior #Emily Reul# had four straight kills to lead the offensive. UWG stayed in control for the remainder of the set, winning 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was all West Georgia, as the Wolves jumped out to a 20-13 lead and cruised to a 25-16 victory to take the match.
Reul led the UWG offensive with 18 kills on the night and she had her seventh double-double of the year with 18 digs as well. Bemis had 15 kills and #Helen Menchinger# added 12 to the tally for the night. Junior middle #Kendall Williams# was stellar as well with eight kills and just one error for a .467 hitting percentage on the night.
In addition to Reul, #Melissa Holt# led the way on the back line with 27 digs in the match and #Drea Matthews# added 13 digs. For Holt, it was the fifth time this season she has had 20 or more digs. Bemis led the way at the net with five blocks on the afternoon.
West Georgia hit .285 as a team on the afternoon, led by setter #Amanda Miller#'s 56 assists, which was the second-most assists in a match at The Coliseum.
The Wolves move to 7-2 on the season and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play, setting up a crucial match on Tuesday evening at defending Gulf South Conference champion West Florida.
