Carrollton, GA - For two sets Tuesday night in Pensacola, Fla., the UWG volleyball team hung shot-for-shot with 21st-ranked West Florida. But in the final two sets, the Argos pulled away, handing UWG its first GSC loss of the season with a 3-1 defeat.
In the first set, the Wolves and Argos were neck-and-neck for the bulk of the game until the set was tied at 15-15. The Argos at that point reeled off five straight points, then held UWG at bay over the final five points, winning the opening set by a 25-21 count.
The second set looked to be a nearly identical script to the first, as West Florida held a 19-15 lead late. An attack error from Jenny Bellairs handed the serve to UWG libero #
Melissa Holt#. The senior was on serve for six straight points, giving the Wolves the lead and then UWG flipped the script, holding off UWF for a 25-23 win to tie the match at 1-1.
In the first two sets, the Wolves had a hitting percentage of more than .200 in each set and had a combined total of eight hitting errors. In the third set, the Argos turned up the defensive pressure, as the Wolves had just nine kills in 39 attempts in the game. UWF hit on 15 kills and pulled ahead with a 25-20 victory.
The final set was the toughest for the Wolves, as UWG committed 10 hitting errors en route to a 25-16 loss in the set and to lose the match.
