Carrollton, Ga - The University of West Georgia continues their home stand against Georgia Regents University Augusta this weekend with a double header on Saturday at 1:00 and 4:00 and then the series finale on Sunday at 1:00. The Wolves defeated Miles College by a final score of 16-0 this Wednesday. With the win, the Wolves climbed back to .500 on the season with a 2-2 record.
Wolves at a Glance
After the lopsided affair on Wednesday against Miles College, the Wolves have won two games in a row and look to continue that streak against the Jags in the weekend series. The Wolves lead the current series 41-30.
Jaguars at a Glance
Georgia Regents University Augusta has started the season losing 2-of-3 games in their opening series against Carson Newman. They lost their first two games, but won the series finale by a final score of 3-2. Jaguars head coach, Jason Eller, is in his first season at Georgia Regents. He spent his previous 11 years on the University of Georgia's coaching staff as a full time assistant and then as a pitching coach.
Wolves Pitching
The Wolves pitching has stepped it up these past two games with
Jamie Sexton shutting down Miles in this weekday's game earning the win and pitching five innings, striking out six batters. Two games ago,
Cody Skinner also picked up his first win on the year against the University of Montevallo in a game he went seven innings only giving up 3 earned runs off 8 hits. Look for both of them to make an appearance this weekend as well as
Colton Duttweiler. Duttweiler also looked strong in the first weekend against Montevallo striking out five opponents in 6.1 innings.
Jaguars Pitching
GRU A pitching looked pretty solid during their first home stand against Carson Newman. They surrendered a total of 12 runs, but the pitching staff kept their team close in every game. For this weekend, UWG should expect to see Frank Warren on the mound. In Warren's first appearance against Cason Newman, he went 6.1 innings striking out 8 opponents to just 2 walks. The Jags will also likely throw Kip Custer in one of the three games. In Custer's first start, he went just over 5 innings giving up one earned run. However, it was not enough to suffice as he was credited the loss.
Wolves Offense
Going into the weekend series, the Wolves team has brought their batting average up to the .300 mark. UWG has scored 46 runs in the first four games and have also been patient at the plate with a .421 on base percentage.
JoJo Underwood and
Galen Smith both lead the Wolves with a .533 batting percentage. Both players have a slugging percentage near the .600 mark and have shown their mobility on the base path with two steals a piece. In fact, the Wolves are 14-14 for stolen bases on the season.
Jaguars Offense
The Jaguars have four players in their lineup who are hitting above .400 for them through their first series against Carson Newman. Wolves pitching should especially be aware of when Jeff Rice steps into the batter's box as he is leading the team with eleven hits and a .364 batting average. The Jaguars haven't been too aggressive on the base bath this early into the season as they haven't even attempted a stolen base, but
Galen Smith will be ready if that time comes!
Previous Matchup
The Wolves won 2-of-3 in the series last year on the road against Augusta State. In the series finale, Sexton took the hill for the Wolves and pitched a beauty. In the game, he went 7 innings striking out 11 and not walking a single batter. The game was won in the eleventh inning when
Blake McLemore picked up the game winning RBI off a single into left field to make the final score 4-3 Wolves.
