Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves earned a split with Gulf South Conference newcomer Lee on Saturday afternoon in Cleveland, Tenn., falling 7-1 in the first-ever game between the two programs in the opener, then taking a pitcher's duel with a 1-0 victory in the second.
Junior pitcher
Cole Janousek started his career at Montevallo on rocky ground, allowing four runs on two hits and walking a batter while recording just one out. But since that moment, the Tifton native has been lights out, allowing just two runs in 17 innings of work. That includes Saturday's gem against the Flames, as Janousek pitched his first complete-game shutout in a UWG uniform, allowing no runs on six hits while striking out three to pick up his first NCAA victory.
The second game of Saturday's doubleheader started with neither team finding a way past the opposing pitcher. Janousek was stellar and had help from his defense, as Lee had four hits through the first four innings. On the opposite side, Nicolay Uherek, the Lee starter, was working on a no-hitter over the first four frames.
The Wolves got on the board by playing small-ball in the fifth, starting with senior
Galen Smith, who broke up the no-hit bid with a double to lead off the inning, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Casey James.
Harrison Waller brought Smith home with a sacrifice fly to center field and Janousek had all the run support he would need on this afternoon.
Lee picked up a hit in the fifth and again in the seventh, but would find no other way to generate a run as Janousek slammed the door shut in each case.
The win was especially important given the result in the first game, as Lee pounded out seven runs on 15 hits to hand the Wolves a 7-1 loss. UWG starter
Cody Skinner took the brunt of the storm in that one, allowing six of the seven runs on 10 hits, but only three were earned, as the UWG defense produced four errors in the game.
West Georgia was on the board first in the game, as
Shaquille Jackson led off the series with a double, then scored two batters later on an RBI single from
Sumner McWhorter. The Flames picked up five hits off of Skinner in the first four innings, but had nothing to show for it as the Wolves took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
But in that frame, the Flames scored seven runs on seven hits, taking advantage of two UWG errors in the process. Freshman lefty
Colton Duttweiler came on in relief midway through the inning, but Lee was already rolling. The Flames scored four more runs after Duttweiler came on to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
The highly-touted Lee pitching staff took over from there, as the Wolves would get just one more baserunner in the game on a Chase Reimer single. The Flames came into the series with a team ERA of 1.71 and allowed just two runs on seven hits over the course of two games.
West Georgia moves to 6-11 on the year and 3-5 in GSC play while Lee falls to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in conference action. The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, with the first pitch set to go at 2 p.m.
