Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia took on the University of North Georgia this evening in a single weekday game, in which the Nighthawks found themselves on the winning end by a final score of 10-5 at Cole Field.
Things started well for the Wolves as they got off to an early 5-1 lead through the first three innings, but UNG scored nine unanswered runs to finish the game.
It didn't take long for West Georgia to get on the scoreboard, as they scored a quick run in the first inning.
Shaquille Jackson got things going early with a triple down the right field line. Two batters later,
Sumner McWhorter doubled down the right field line scoring Jackson from third and giving UWG a 1-0 lead.
North Georgia answered the one run right back in the top of the second inning, as Kevin Krupp led off the inning with a single up the middle, and eventually came into score off an RBI from Joey Cecere to tie the game at 1-1.
After the third inning, the Wolves were eccentric, as they added four runs and opened the game up to a 5-1 lead.
In the inning, UWG scored four runs off of four hits and one error. The Nighthawks had to use three different pitchers to finally get the inning to close. Artemis Khadkhodian and
Jake Shirley each picked up an RBI off a bases loaded walk. Jackson also picked up an RBI towards the end of the inning off a single to shortstop which scored
Bryan Dunson.
However, the Nighthawks once again answered right back, matching the Wolves for runs in the following inning.
UNG scored four runs in the top of the fourth off of three hits and one error.
Colton Duttweiler got things going off right in the top half of the inning striking out Krupp, but after a West Georgia error, the Nighthawks piled on four unearned runs tying the game at 5-5.
North Georgia scored one more run in the top of the sixth and four more in the top of the seventh inning to take a 10-5 lead.
A.J. Sunstrom was credited for the loss for UWG and Chip Fleming with the win for North Georgia.
The final score finished at 10-5, with UNG victorious. UWG out-hit North Georgia, but left ten runners on base compared to North Georgia's five runners left on.
West Georgia moves to 8-15 on the year, and now prepare to take on GSC opponent, Georgia College. The three-game weekend series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at Cole Field, and a single game to wrap up the series on Sunday.
