Shorter Series Preview: Game 1 Changed to 1 PM

Game Notes

Carrollton, GA -
The University of West Georgia finishes their home stand this weekend as they host Shorter College. The three-game series begins on Saturday with a doubleheader at Cole Field at 1:00 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

West Georgia at a Glance
The Wolves wrap up their eight-game home stand this weekend against the Shorter College Hawks. The Wolves have an overall record of 8-15 and a 3-6 Gulf South Conference record. The Wolves are on three game slide, but look to take advantage of a Hawks team that is 7-15 this year and 3-9 on the road.

Shorter at a Glace
The Hawks are coming off a 6-4 victory against Stillman College on Tuesday heading into this weekend's series in Carrollton. Shorter College has struggled against GSC opponents with an overall record of 4-9 against them. The Hawks were swept by Valdosta State and Alabama-Huntsville this year, but they did sweep Christian Brothers at home in late February.

West Georgia Offense
The Wolves have been much more successful against right-handed pitching this hitting year hitting .263 versus only hitting .192 against left-handed pitching. Shaquille Jackson comes into the weekend series really leading the Wolves offensively, batting .351 and leading the team in hits and slugging percentage. UWG has been effective stealing bases this year as they are 34-40, an 85% success rate.

Shorter Offense
Shorter College comes into this weekend's series hitting .241 as a team and with two players who are batting over .300 on the season. Zach Santos is a player to keep an eye on this weekend, as he leads the Hawks in practically every offensive category. Santos is hitting .315 and seven doubles, two triples, and two homeruns.

West Georgia Pitching
The Wolves team ERA is 4.45 in the 2014 season. Starting pitchers Cody Skinner and Jamie Sexton have really helped carry the Wolves. Skinner, who will likely be seen in game one, is 3-3 on the year and has a 3.00 ERA. He has pitched three complete games and opposing teams are only hitting .250 against him. Sexton has also pitched well, throwing the most innings for UWG thus far in 2014. He also has a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Shorter Pitching
The Hawks pitching has been up and down this year heading into this weekend. Their pitching staff has an ERA of 5.49 on the year, and opponents are hitting just under .300 against them. The Hawk's best pitcher has been Junior, Colton Cross. Cross is 2-2 on the year with a 3.35 ERA and has one complete game. One of the better pitchers for Shorter actually comes out of the bullpen in Christian Champion. In eight appearances, Champion is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA and has also picked up a save on the year.

Previous Matchup
The Wolves won 2-of-3 games against the Hawks in the 2013 season. In the final game of the series, Sexton took the hill for the Wolves, pitching the complete game and picking up his fifth win of the season in a 7-0 victory.
