Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia baseball team took on Shorter College in a doubleheader this afternoon at Cole Field and rode the arm of
Cody Skinner to take a 5-1 victory in game one, the used an outstanding effort from
Jamie Sexton in game two, as UWG took their first Gulf South Conference series of the year with a 3-2 win.
Game One
Cody Skinner took the hill for game one of today's doubleheader and pitched another beauty. Skinner pitched his fourth complete game of the 2014 season, allowing just five hits and no earned runs. With the win, Skinner moves to a 4-3 record on the year.
The Wolves got things rolling in the bottom of the second inning, as they scored three runs and never looked back.
Casey James led off the inning with a single through the right side, and then moved to second on a single from
JoJo Underwood. The single was one of three hits for Underwood in the game. James then came into score off a single from
Bryan Dunson to take a 1-0 lead.
Underwood and Dunson also came into score in the bottom of the second from RBI from
Galen Smith and Artemis Khadkhodian, respectively.
Shorter scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth, but the Wolves answered them immediately in the bottom half of the inning. After a double from Khadkhodian,
Shaquille Jackson singled up the middle to score him from second base making the score 4-1.
UWG added one more run in the sixth off a single from Dunson. The RBI gave Dunson his second of the day and a 5-1 lead. Skinner would completely shut down the Hawk's offense for the rest of the game and the Wolves took home the 5-1 win.
Shorter did have one shining moment in game one of the series, as they turned a triple play in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Wolves had bases loaded with nobody out when Dunson lined out to Zach Santos at shortstop. He reacted immediately, stepping on second base, then flipping it to first to get all three outs.
Game Two
Jamie Sexton got the start in game two of the doubleheader for West Georgia. Sexton also pitched well going 4.1 innings only allowing one earned run off of four hits.
However, game two was a little bit more of a nail-biter compared to the first matchup. The Wolves pulled out the slim 3-2 victory that went all the way down to the final pitch of the game.
Shorter got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning, after Darrius Jennings reached base on an error, then came into score off a single from Brian Mathews, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
UWG got on the board in the bottom of the third as Jackson came into score. It all started as he walked with one out to get on base, then a throwing error to move him to second, and then eventual coming into score after stealing third and a throwing error by the catcher.
The back and forth battle continued in the top of the fourth inning as the Hawks scored one run off of two hits to take a 2-1 lead.
West Georgia remained resilient, however, scoring one run in the fifth and sixth innings to give them a 3-2 lead.
After
Sumner McWhorter tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth, Smith picked up the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring Underwood, after he singled to first base.
The top of the seventh was intense as Jacob Forrest led off the inning with single to right center. The Hawks then had runners at first and third with one out after a sacrifice bunt and a single from Dylan Riner.
Head Coach
Skip Fite then went to
Taylor Craft out of the bullpen.
Underwood picked up the second out of the inning, as Shorter decided to bunt to move the runners over to second and third. Craft then intentionally walked the next batter to cause a force at any base to end the game. Come to find out, that would not be necessary, as Craft froze Mathews at the plate, and struck him out looking to end the game in dramatic fashion.
A.J. Sunstrom picked up the win for the Wolves and is now 1-1 on the year. Craft was credited with the first save of the season for West Georgia.
With the Wolves officially winning their first weekend series of the year, they move to 10-15 on the year and 5-7 in the GSC. They will play again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. to wrap up the three-game series against Shorter College.
