Carrollton, GA - The UWG baseball squad lost a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, TN, as the Lee Flames used another powerful pitching effort and timely hitting late in the game to hand the Wolves a 3-1 loss in Gulf South Conference play.
UWG All-American pitcher
Jamie Sexton threw yet another gem in the game, going 7.1 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs to take the loss. He threw 109 pitches on the afternoon, induced 14 groundouts and three flyouts while dueling with Lee starter Dustin Lawson. The Lee starter went seven innings, allowing a run on two hits.
Sexton and Lawson dueled to a 0-0 tie in the first three innings, but West Georgia was the first to strike in the fourth, as
Shaquille Jackson led off the frame with a single, then promptly stole second. Three batters later, with Jackson on third,
Harrison Waller singled, scoring Jackson and giving the Wolves a 1-0 advantage.
That was where the score would stay until the sixth, when Lee got on the board after Cameron Brewster led off the bottom of the inning with a triple. Derrick Pitts followed with a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1. Lee then closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Wolves fall to 6-12 on the year with a 3-6 mark in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia will play three games this week in out-of-conference play, taking on Stillman at home on Wednesday and Florida Tech on Friday and Saturday. First pitch on Wednesday is set for 4 p.m. at Cole Field.
