Pensacola, FL - West Georgia played the series finale today against West Florida in hopes of winning 2-of-3 games on the road against the #5 ranked team, but lost a close game by a final score of 3-2.
The Wolves were trying to do something today that has only happened once since 2011. That was to win a series at Spooner Field in Pensacola. The only team to do it in the past four years was the Delta State Statesmen in 2012.
Colton Duttweiler got the start on the hill for the Wolves in today's game. Duttweiler did pitch well, going four innings and allowing three earned runs off of five hits, although did show some command issues walking five Argo players. He took the loss for UWG and moves to 2-2 on the year.
West Florida scored twice in the first three innings, taking advantage of miscues from the Wolves in both situations. In the first, the Argos had runners on the corners and a failed pickoff attempt to first scored Aaron Hagg from third base. The Argos added another run in the bottom of the third inning off a throwing error by
Galen Smith as a West Florida player was stealing third base to make the game 2-0.
However, the Wolves would make it a game again, scoring in the both the fourth and fifth inning to tie it at 2-2. In the fourth,
Artemis Kadkhodaian came up with a crucial bases loaded single to left field to score
Bryan Dunson from third. The following inning,
Sumner McWhorter hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field which would tie the game.
West Florida would score the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the fifth, however, and go on to win by a final score of 3-2.
Dunson and McWhorter both had two two-hit days, and
Taylor Craft pitched well coming on in the fifth to relieve Duttweiler. Craft pitched four innings without giving up a run and only allowed four hits.
With the loss, the Wolves move to an overall record of 12-17 on the year and 6-8 in Gulf South Conference play. UWG will be back in action this Wednesday at Cole Field to face Georgia Southwestern at 5:00 p.m.
