Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia baseball team hosted the Statesmen of Delta State today in a doubleheader matchup at Cole Field. The Statesmen came out victorious winning game one by a score of 9-2 and then winning game two by a final score of 11-3.
The story of the day was Delta State's electrifying offensive firepower that put up 20 runs off of 30 hits in the two games combined. The Wolves also committed a combined 7 errors on defense that assisted DSU coming out on top in the doubleheader.
In game one,
Cody Skinner took the hill for the Wolves with a record of 3-3 on the season. He matched up against Michael Manley, who was 5-0 coming into the ballgame.
West Georgia got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning.
JoJo Underwood got the first hit of the game for the Wolves, as he led off the inning with a single that deflected off Manley on the mound. He eventually came into score off of Tyler Bowers first Collegiate RBI for West Georgia to make the game 1-0.
Through the first three innings, it appeared as if the game would be a pitchers duel, as only one runner came across home plate and both teams had dominant pitchers throwing. Then the top of the fourth inning hit, and the DSU offense came to life.
The Statesmen tallied six runs off of six hits and two errors, as the DSU offense batted around in the top of the fourth inning. That set the tone for the rest of the game, as Delta State never looked back from their 6-1 lead.
Underwood had the best day offensively in game one going 3-for-4 and scoring twice.
In game two,
Colton Duttweiler started for West Georgia and matched up against Jonathan Moody for Delta State.
It appeared as if both teams were settled down offensively in the second game, as both clubs scored three runs each through the first three innings.
Delta State scored first, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. However, the Wolves answered right back against the #13 ranked team in the nation, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning and taking a 3-2 lead.
Much like the first game, the Statesmen had a big inning that helped contribute in large part to their win.
In the top of the fifth inning, DSU scored five runs off of five hits and one UWG error that gave them an 8-3 lead. Delta State would go on to score two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to bring home an 11-3 win.
With both of today's losses, the Wolves move to 12-20 on the year and 6-10 in Gulf South Conference play. The series finale will be played tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Cole Field
