Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia heads back home to Carrollton, GA to take on Stillman College in a single weekday game at Cole Field on Wednesday, March 5. The game marks the beginning of a 7-game homestand for the Wolves.
West Georgia at a Glance
The Wolves come into Wednesday's game 6-12 overall and 3-5 in Gulf South Conference play. UWG is coming off a tough road matchup against Lee University, in which the Wolves were able to win the second game of the series off a spectacular performance from
Cole Janousek.
Jamie Sexton also put the Wolves in a position to steal the third game on the road, but the Wolves' offense failed to score more than one run.
Stillman at a Glance
The Tigers come into tomorrow's game with an overall record of 7-8 and 2-0 in the SIAC. The game against West Georgia will be the first time the two teams have ever matched up. Stillman was supposed to play against Alabama-Huntsville and West Alabama previously this season, but the game was cancelled due to weather.
West Georgia Offense
As a team, UWG is batting .235 through eighteen games.
Shaquille Jackson leads the team in batting with a .368 batting average, and also comes into tomorrow's game with an eleven game hitting streak.
JoJo Underwood is another player in the offense that has been holding UWG afloat. Underwood has a .333 average in thirteen starts and leads the team with ten RBI. When West Georgia players reach base, look for them to be aggressive, as they are 30-for-35 on stolen bases this year.
Stillman Offense
The Tigers only have a team batting average of .258 in the 2014 season; however, they do have a few standouts that have been hitting the ball well. One of these players is Paul Winterbottom. Winterbottom is leading the team with a .404 batting average, with three doubles, and six RBI. The Wolves also need to be careful when he reaches base, as he also leads the team with five stolen bases. Another threat on offense is Kyle Smith. Smith has a .333 average and is second on the team with hits.
West Georgia Pitching
The Wolves starting pitching has been the backbone of the team through the first third of the season. For the second-straight week, a UWG pitcher has earned recognition from the Gulf South Conference as the GSC Pitcher of the Week. Last week, it was All-American Sexton, and this week, Janousek's efforts against Lee this past weekend earned him the honor. Sexton is 2-2 on the year with a 3.61 ERA and has 28 strikeouts to just 11 walks. Janousek is 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA. In his last start, he pitched seven innings with six strikeouts and didn't allow a run.
Stillman Pitching
The Tigers pitching staff has done a pretty good job of keeping their team in games thus far. Their team ERA is probably a little higher than they want at 4.83, but their starters have pitched fairly well. Tyler Vails could be a potential starter the Wolves see in their game with the Tigers. Vails has started in two games and appeared in six this year and has a 2.45 ERA. He has a record of 1-1 and has allowed just six runs in 22 innings. West Georgia will also likely see Miles Jeanminette out of the bullpen. Jeanminette has appeared in four games with a 2.70 ERA, and opponents are only hitting .267 against him.
