Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia baseball team plays host to rival opponent Valdosta State this weekend in a three-game series at Cole Field. The matchup will begin on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., and then the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Game Notes
Wolves at a Glance
West Georgia comes into this weekend with an overall record of 13-23 and a 7-12 Gulf South Conference record. One of West Georgia's goals in the series will be to get off to an early lead, as the Wolves are 7-0 when leading after seven innings.
Blazers at a Glance
VSU comes into this weekend with an overall record of 21-14 and a GSC record of 12-10. The Blazers are struggling as of late, losing four straight games and losing to Albany State on Thursday night. Valdosta State is just 7-7 on the road this season, so the Wolves will look to take advantage of playing back at Cole Field.
Wolves Offense
As a team, UWG comes into the series against VSU with an average just under .260 on the season. The Wolves hottest hitter this season is now
JoJo Underwood, as he leads the team with a .340 batting average. Underwood also leads the team with a .406 slugging percentage, picking up six extra base hits in the 2014 season. In the Wolves last series against the University of North Alabama,
Jake Shirley took the hitting crown, batting .600 in the series, getting six base hits in ten at bats and scoring two runs.
Blazers Offense
VSU is hitting .306 as a unit in the 2014 season. They have good hitting throughout their lineup, so the Wolves pitching staff will need to be at their best. The Blazers second baseman, Matthew Fears, leads the team in hits with 54 and also in doubles with fourteen. Fears also reaches base 40% of the time and has scored 35 times. Wolves should be careful pitching to the Blazers big bat, Bryant Hayman. Hayman has belted seven homeruns on the year and has brought in 41 runs.
Wolves Pitching
The Wolves come into the series with a team ERA of 4.35 and with an opponent's batting average of .291.In last weekend's matchup against UNA,
Cody Skinner and
A.J. Sunstrom both pitched complete games for UWG. Skinner dominated on the mound in game one of that series, striking out nine North Alabama batters and allowing just two runs.
Jamie Sexton will also throw one game of the series.
Blazers Pitching
VSU pitching had done their part in most games to keep their team in games. As a whole, the staff has an ERA of 4.36. The Wolves offense will likely see Dom DeMasi (5-3), Josh Mann (6-1), and Ethan Bornstein (3-1) start in each of the three games. So far, DeMasi has been the most dominant, pitching in three complete games, throwing two shutouts, and maintaining the lowest ERA of the starters with a 2.40 ERA.
Previous Matchup
As many people may recall, the last times these two teams faced was in the Gulf South Conference Semifinals last year. The Wolves scored two late runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Blazers by a final score of 5-4 and advance to the finals against Delta State. Sexton was credited with the win, pitching seven strong innings, allowing just two earned runs.
