GSC Play Continues as Wolves travel to Memphis

Carrollton, GA - After a successful weekend in which West Georgia beat Valdosta State in 2-of-3 games at Cole Field, the Wolves prepare for Gulf South Conference action tomorrow against Christian Brothers University. A doubleheader will be played on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. and the series finale on Saturday will begin at 2 p.m.

Wolves at a Glance
UWG travels to Dahlonega, GA with an overall record of 15-24 and a 9-14 GSC. West Georgia's bats are coming around as the team inches closer to the GSC tournament. This past weekend against Valdosta State, the Wolves hit .301 as a team and had six players who hit .300 or better. Against solid pitching, UWG hit six doubles, two triples, and scored 18 runs in the series.

Sumner McWhorter was the real standout this past weekend, batting .500 and driving in four runs. McWhorter also had a slugging percentage of .875, walked three times, and was 2-for-2 on stolen bases. Casey James also had a very successful weekend, not only did he go 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position, he also had the game winning hit in game one of the Saturday doubleheader, and a go-ahead two run triple in the sixth inning to lead the Wolves to victory.

The Wolves also saw some excellent work out of their bullpen in the series against VSU. Taylor Craft appeared in game one of Saturday's doubleheader and was credited with the win as he pitched two innings and allowed just one run. Chris Burdette also looked eccentric in game two on Saturday, pitching the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings allowing no runs and just one hit.

Bucs at a Glance
CBU comes into this weekend with an overall record of 11-28 and just 3-21 in the GSC. The Bucs are on a three-game losing streak after being swept by UAH last weekend in Huntsville, AL. The team has just won one game on the road this year, but is playing a bit better at home as they are 10-16.

The 2014 campaign has been a bit of a struggle at times for CBU. As a team at the plate this year, CBU is hitting just .240 on the season with only one everyday player hitting above the .300 mark. Mac Cooley is hitting .329 this season with ten doubles and 17 RBI. Charles Kelly is another player the Wolves may want to keep their eye on. Kelly is only hitting .209, but has a good eye and hits at the right time as he leads the team in RBI and walks.

The Bucs have had some ups and downs in pitching this season. Their team has a 4.46 ERA and opposing teams are hitting .302 against them. Michael Spain has really been the shining star in the Bucs rotation this year as he is 5-2 with a 2.91 ERA. Spain has been the most consistent player on the hill for CBU, as opponents are hitting just .268 against him. The Wolves will also see starter Jake Garbuzinski start in one of the games. Garbuzinski leads the team by far in innings pitched with 71.2 innings.
