Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia baseball team traveled to Florence, AL to take on the Lions of North Alabama this weekend, and the Wolves came away victorious in the first of three games against UNA by a final score of 5-2.
Cody Skinner pitched his fifth complete game of the year out of ten starts, striking out nine UNA batters and allowing just two runs through the nine innigns. With another dominant performance from Skinner, and some clutch hitting from the offense, the Wolves were able to get out of their six game losing streak.
The game was back-and-forth through the first six innings. Every time the Wolves scored in the top half of the inning, the Lions would immediately match UWG in the bottom half of the same inning. Both teams put up one run each in third and fourth inning, but the Wolves changed that pattern, scoring three in the top of the seventh to solidify their win.
The Wolves reached the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning as
Sumner McWhorter picked up the first RBI of the game, scoring
Jake Shirley on a fielder's choice. West Georgia added their second run in the following inning off an error from the Lions third baseman that allowed
Bryan Dunson to score.
Heading into the seventh inning, the game was all tied up at two, but a clutch hit from Dunson opened up the flood gates. Dunson came through with a clutch one out single that gave the Wolves a 3-2 lead.
Artemis Kadkhodaian followed him up with a sigle that scored
Galen Smith from third, and Dunson added the final run of the game coming in to score on a wild pitch that made the game 5-2.
Harrison Waller and McWhorter both had 3-for-5 days at the plate.
West Georgia moves to 13-21 on the year and 7-11 in the Gulf South Conference. Tomorrow's doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. will wrap up the series against UNA.
