Birmingham, AL - Today's game between West Georgia and West Florida kicked off the start of The 2014 Red Zone Sports Bar & Grill GSC Tournament. A dominant pitching performance from Argonaut's starting pitcher Dawson Brown lifted UWF to a 3-0 victory.
Head Coach
Skip Fite went with
Cody Skinner in the Wolves' first game. Earlier this year, Skinner picked up a win against UWF in a game where he pitched 6.1 innings and struck out five Argonaut batters. Skinner also pitched well in today's game, but after taking a ground ball off his right shin, he left the game after allowing no earned runs in four innings of work.
Taylor Craft came in for relief of Skinner, and Craft gave West Georgia 3.2 solid innings of work on the mound, allowing just one earned run off of three hits.
West Florida scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third off a single from Aaron Haag that scored two Argonaut runners from second and third.
With a 2-0 leading heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, UWF added one more insurance run to their lead. Cliff Covington led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and eventually came into score off a single to left field from Garrett Flynn to make the score 3-0.
The story from the game was the performance from UWF pitcher Dawson Brown, as he pitched the complete game, striking out seven batters and allowing just two hits.
The Wolves will play again tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. ET. Their opponent is not yet determined, but will be the loser of the Alabama Huntsville vs. North Alabama game, which will be played this afternoon.
