Birmingham, AL - A promising start to the second game of the GSC tournament turned for the worst as the Lions scored eight straight runs to win the game by a final score of 8-3 at Young Memorial Field.
Jamie Sexton took the hill for the Wolves in the second game of the GSC Tournament against UNA. Sexton pitched well early, but came out of the game in the fifth inning after giving up two runs to the Lions in a 2-2 game.
The game looked promising right out of the gate for the Wolves as they had bases loaded with just one out in the top of the first inning. However, a groundout to third and a strikeout by Lion's pitcher Riley Sanderson, ended the West Georgia inning to no avail.
The Wolves would once again load up the bases in the top of third inning, but this time they came away with a couple of runs.
Andrew Witte came to the plate with the bases full and drove in the first West Georgia run off a shallow fly ball to left field that fell in for a hit and that scored
Sumner McWhorter from third.
Cody Short came up next, and after he worked the count full, he earned himself a bases loaded walk to score the second run of the inning for UWG to make the score 2-0.
North Alabama would answer back in bottom of the third inning as Matthew Tittle led off the inning with a double down the left field line. The Lions were able to bring Tittle into score and make the game 2-1.
UNA scored another run in the bottom of the fourth when Josh Carpenter came to the plate with bases loaded. A flare out to left field, similar to Witte's hit in the top of third, was good enough to bring in the tying run of the game. However, Tittle grounded into a crucial double play that stopped the bleeding and ended the inning.
The big blow came in the bottom of the fifth, as the Lions once again loaded up the bases. With no one out in the inning, Kyle Conkle singled up the middle scoring two runs and giving them a 4-2 lead. Later in the inning, the Lions scored two more runs off an error at shortstop, and added their seventh run of the game off a single to center field.
UNA added one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning, after Jake Smith tripled to lead off the inning. He later came into score off a sac fly to center to make the score 8-2.
The Wolves did add one more run in the top of the ninth as
Casey James singled to the shortstop scoring McWhorter from third base. The RBI made the game 8-3, and that is how the game finished at Young Memorial Field.
West Georgia baseball finished the season with an overall record of 21-25 and a conference record of 15-14. The 2014 season marked the first winning record in conference in nearly a decade, and the most wins in conference of all time for UWG baseball.
