Wolves run past Lee on the road

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves hardly looked rusty against the Lee Flames in the first game after the holiday break Saturday afternoon, scoring 48 points in each half to upend the Flames by a score of 96-72 at Paul Dana Walker Arena in Cleveland, TN.

How It Happened: The Wolves opened the game strong, taking a 14-8 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest. West Georgia kept things going through the next four minutes, leading 19-12 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half when the Wolves exploded offensively. From the 9:44 mark to the 4:29 point, West Georgia outscored Lee 21-5, taking a commanding 40-17 lead on a Deontre Brown three-pointer.

Lee called a timeout at that point and settled down, then went on a 9-1 run of their own, cutting the Wolves lead to 15 at 41-26 before an Alex Abreu three-pointer shook the cobwebs off for UWG. The Wolves closed out the half with a steal and a layup from Deonta Stocks to take a 48-31 advantage into the locker room at the break. One of the biggest parts of the West Georgia lead came as UWG forced 11 turnovers and committed just two. Stocks led with 11 points in the half, followed by Emory Bernard with 10 points, but it was a total team effort, as four players were nearly in double-figures in the first half alone.

In the second half, the Wolves' offense was just as good as in the first half, scoring 48 again in the half while running away with the game. But early in the second half, the Flames went on a run, cutting West Georgia lead to 12 at 56-44 with 14:09 remaining in the game. That was as close as Lee would get to the Wolves, as West Georgia would run off another 40-point run, outscoring the Flames 40-28 over the final 12 minutes to take the 24-point victory.

The Wolves had six players in double-figures for the first time this season, led by 19 points from GSC scoring leader Deonta Stocks. Alex Abreu was next in line with 13 points, followed by Taylor Cochran, Emory Bernard and Marcus Dortch with 12 points each. Deontre Brown was the final double-figure scorer, adding 10 points for the cause. West Georgia was big at the three-point line on the day, hitting 13 from beyond the arc.

They Said It: "I'm not happy with six turnovers, but there were four turnovers down the stretch that shouldn't have happened. If this team doesn't turn the ball over then we will be very tough to beat, because these guys can score." - Head Coach Michael Cooney

"Another huge key to our turnovers and our scoring was having Thomas Higginbotham back in the game. He didn't score, but he helped set the table for the scorers and he really ran this game for us. It's great to have him back on the floor after missing the last two games before the break." - Head Coach Michael Cooney

What it Means: The outcome of the Mississippi College/Alabama Huntsville game is still in doubt, but the Wolves are now in a four-way tie for the Gulf South Conference lead at 4-2 on the year. West Georgia now has five of their next seven Gulf South Conference games at home, giving UWG a chance to put themselves in a good position for the GSC postseason.

Odds and Ends: Dylan Dupree made his first appearance in a West Georgia game, playing four minutes in the first half ... the 6-9 center will give the Wolves size that has been lacking at times this season ... The 8th of the 11 games this season where UWG has at least 87 points ... UWG leads the GSC in scoring, but today's five players in double-figures marks just the third time that has happened for the Wolves this season ... UWG's six players in double-figures marks the first time that feat has happened this season.

Up Next: West Georgia continues the brutal beginning to the 2014-15 Gulf South Conference season, as the Wolves will play their sixth road contest in their first seven against GSC competition. UWG will have a short trip for this one, as West Georgia will take on the Shorter Hawks in Rome, GA at 8:00 p.m. on Monday evening.
