Carrollton, GA - It was a dramatic finish at University Field on Tuesday night as the Wolves used an overtime goal by
Francessca Ellis to knock off in-state rival Valdosta State 2-1 in a pivotal Gulf South Conference soccer matchup.
For Ellis, it was her first goal of the season and first career overtime goal. For West Georgia, it is just the second win over Valdosta State in seven tries. Both wins over VSU came in overtime as the last victory over the Blazers was an overtime win in the GSC Tournament in 2012.
In a game that featured a lot of great defense, shots were hard to come by, and shots on goal were held to a minimum. There were only seven combined shots on goal in the contest, with four coming from the Wolves.
West Georgia got on the board first with a spectacular goal in the 21
st minute. On a UWG free kick, freshman
Katie Mitchell used a quick lob over the VSU wall to find a wide open
Alexis Lewis who got the shot by the VSU keeper for the game's opening goal.
For Lewis, the goal was her fourth of the year which ties
Cortney Emmert for the team lead. Mitchell's assist was her third of the season for the freshman.
That would be all of the offense in the first 45 minutes as the Wolves took the 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the break.
Valdosta State wasted no time in tying things up as Jade Reynolds had a long goal that deflected off of UWG's
Katie Miklausich and into the goal, tying things up in the 49
th minute.
Over the final 41 minutes of regulation, the Wolves and Blazers fought hard on the pitch, with neither team gaining much of an advantage at all. The Wolves were held to just four shots in the second period.
It took just over a minute for the Wolves to capitalize as after a corner from
Alexis Lewis, the ball rattled around before
AnnaLeah Deese found
Francessca Ellis who buried the shot in the top right corner for the game-winner.
The Wolves improve to 7-6-1 overall on the year and 5-3-1 in Gulf South Conference play. UWG now has 16 points in the conference standings and sit in fifth place.
UWG remains at home this week on Friday as the Wolves host the Alabama Huntsville Chargers on Senior Night at University Field. Kickoff from University Field is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23.
