Livingston, AL - For the second time in eight days, the West Georgia Wolves soccer team used overtime goals to stun their opponents as the Wolves took down West Alabama in a 1-0 overtime victory on the road at Tiger Stadium.
This time it was
Cari Powell who played hero for the Wolves as her 95
th minute goal on a breakaway lifted the Wolves. Just last Tuesday, West Georgia knocked off VSU on a
Francessca Ellis overtime goal.
For the Wolves, it keeps their chances of hosting a Gulf South Conference Tournament game alive. With West Florida's 3-0 win over Valdosta State, UWG will now face West Florida on Saturday with the winner earning a chance to host the first round game of the GSC Tourney on November 3.
The first half was a defensive battle as the Wolves and Tigers combined for just eight shots with six of those coming from the Tigers playing on their home turf. The Wolves were able to fend off two chances from the Tigers late in the half as UWA had two corner kicks in a matter of 30 seconds. Sophomore keeper
Katie Miklausich was forced to make one save in the first 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless at the break.
The second half had a few more opportunities as the two teams combined for ten shots in that period. Through 90 minutes of play, Miklausich had made five saves to send the game to its first overtime period.
Five minutes into the first overtime, Powell came out on a breakaway and got it past the UWA goalkeeper for the game winner. The goal was the third of the season for Powell, the senior from Lawrenceville.
Miklausich ended the night with six saves as she and the Wolves shutout a UWA offense that came into the contest averaging over two goals per contest. The shutout is the third of the season for West Georgia which is the most in a single season since 2012.
West Georgia now improves to 9-6-1 overall on the season, which ties for the second most wins in a season in UWG soccer history. In 2006, UWG also had nine wins. The most wins in a single season ever by a UWG squad is 13, which came in 2005.
UWG now shifts their focus to the regular season finale against West Florida on Saturday afternoon in Pensacola. The Wolves and Argos are scheduled to kickoff at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
