Livingston, AL - For the second time in six days, the University of West Georgia soccer team went into overtime with West Alabama, this time in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Wolves and Tigers played 100 minutes without deciding a winner before West Alabama won the game in a penalty shootout, breaking the Wolves' hearts.
The Wolves offense was stagnant as West Georgia was unable to pressure the West Alabama keeper in the opening period. West Alabama got seven shots off, forcing sophomore
Katie Miklausich to make three key saves to preserve the scoreless tie at the break.
The second half was better offensively for the Wolves as UWG had five shots, putting all of them on goal.
Kyla Wright-Marshall nearly won the game with a header from a corner kick, but the attempt was wide. Neither team was able to break through however as the two teams ended regulation in a 0-0 tie.
In the first 10 minutes of overtime, West Georgia and West Alabama played a tight defensive battle with just three shots between the two squads.
The second overtime period was more of the same, as both teams were able to pressure the keeper, but neither team could connect and find the back of the net, sending the game into a penalty shootout.
Kelly Geary was first for West Georgia in the shootout as she connected in the first attempt. The Wolves gained an advantage when the first attempt from West Alabama sailed over the goal.
The second attempt for UWG was from
Kyla Wright-Marshall who scored the PK, before West Alabama answered back with their first successful attempt.
In the third frame of attempts,
Katie Mitchell would miss, opening the door for West Alabama to get back into it. The Tigers took advantage scoring to even things up at two after three attempts each.
The next two attempts by each team were good as
Francessca Ellis and
Ashlynn Deese made their attempts, ending the shootout with four goals apiece.
On the sixth attempt,
Tyler Johnson missed, opening the door for West Alabama, but their attempt was wide right, and the shootout continued.
It was the seventh attempt that won the game for West Alabama as Rachel Lane hit the crossbar with her attempt, and West Alabama connected and won the game.
The loss ends the season for West Georgia who reached the postseason for the first time since 2012. The Wolves finished with a 9-8-1 record overall.
