Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Baseball team completed a weekend sweep of the Lee Flames by winning both games of Saturday at Cole Field. The Wolves had to fight back from early deficits in both games, but the UWG pitchers would ultimately have the final say in who would win both games of the day. UWG won the opener by an 8-1 count, then powered past Lee in the late session with a 6-3 win.
Jamie Sexton started the first game of the day, throwing a gem, allowing one run in eight innings of work as UWG to pick up his fourth win of the season with an 8-1. The Flames struck first with one run in the fourth inning, but that is all they would score for the game, as Sexton was brilliant. The senior struck out four batters and only gave up four hits to continue his bid for a second All-American season in his collegiate career. He now has has a record of 4-1 and is tied for the most wins in the Gulf South Conference.
The game was tied late in the game but the Wolves would score four runs in the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth to break the game open.
Tyler Hutch and
Sumner McWhorter both led the offense with two RBI each and McWhorter had four hits to go along with two runs scored. The duo combined for six of the Wolves nine hits for the game. Also,
Artemis Kadkhodaian had a solid outing, getting one hit and one RBI while also scoring a run in the contest..
The second game of the day, which the Wolves won 6-3, belonged to
Brandon Goldsmith as he came on in relief for starter
A.J. Sunstrom and only allowed one hit in four innings of work. Sunstrom went went three innings and he gave up three earned runs on five hits. Goldsmith picked up the win in the game, which is his first of the season, and he kept the Flames' hitters off-balance all afternoon.
Like the first game, this game was tied late in the ballgame before the Wolves would score three runs in the bottom of the sixth, assisted by two errors committed by Lee. Kadkhodaian was the star of the second game as he picked up three hits and had a key two-RBI double in the first inning. The top three hitters in the lineup, Hutch, Brown, and McWhorter, each scored two runs each and combined for four hits.
After the series sweep of the Lee, the Wolves now have a record of 11-5 and are 5-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Next of the schedule for UWG is a game with Stillman on Wednesday, March 4th at Cole Field. The Wolves next Conference game will be on Saturday, March 7th against Mississippi College in Clinton, MS.
