Carrollton, GA - With a three game win streak on the line, the UWG Baseball team will continue their undefeated season with another home game Friday, February 6
th against the Montevallo Falcons. The Wolves are coming off an exciting game against Georgia Regents-Augusta in which they won 4-3.
Early in the season, the pitching staff has been the difference for the Wolves and is the main reason for the team's hot start. The starting pitchers for UWG (
Matthew Norton,
Josh Morgan, and
Jamie Sexton) have combined for three wins and have only allowed two earned runs over 12 innings. The bullpen has also been stellar for
Skip Fite's ball club only allowing four earned runs over 13 innings pitched.
Colton Duttweiler and
Chris Burdette are leading the group of relievers combining for seven innings so far. Closer
Tyler Gunnin is also off to a fantastic start picking up the save against Georgia Regents-Augusta and he has yet to give up a hit in two innings of work.
Another key part of the Wolves fast start is the top of the lineup starting with leadoff man
Tyler Hutch. He has an impressive on base percentage of .615% and has been the catalyst for the team getting on base and putting pressure on the opposing defense with his speed.
Garrett Hayes has capitalized on the RBI chances created by the top of the lineup by driving in a team high six runs.
The offense has been very patient to this point in the season and it has allowed the team to have favorable counts when hitting. The Wolves have accumulated 23 walks to only 13 strikeouts early on. On the other hand, the UWG pitching staff has only given up seven walks and has struck out their opponents 20 times this season.
West Georgia still has three more home games before they hit the road for the first time this season. They will host Montevallo this weekend starting Friday February 6
th at 3pm. The first pitch for both games Saturday and Sunday will be at 1pm.
