Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia baseball team lost its first game of the 2015 season on Saturday afternoon, falling after a late rally from the Montevallo Falcons delivered a 7-2 result at Cole Field.

For the first six innings of the game, it was a pitcher's duel between Montevallo's Landon Smith and UWG's Brandon Goldsmith. Skip Fite gave the ball to Goldsmith after a rough outing as a reliever earlier this week, when Goldsmith lasted less than an inning on the Cole Field mound. In his first start at UWG, Goldsmith started out shaky in the first, but ended up going 4.1 innings on the day, allowing just two runs with a trio of strikeouts.

West Georgia opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, as right fielder Tyler Hutch led off the game for UWG taking one in the middle of the back. He then stole second and moved to third on a groundout from Sumner McWhorter. First baseman Dalton Rogers grounded out to second to drive in the run and give the Wolves a 1-0 lead early.

Montevallo scored in the top of the second and both teams put up runs in the fifth, as the two teams went into the final four innings of the game in a dead heat at 2-2. But the Falcons took advantage of a trio of tough innings for the UWG pitching staff, as the Wolves walked five batters in the seventh and eighth innings and hit a batter. Montevallo used that to score five runs in the final three innings, and West Georgia struggled at the plate to take the 7-2 loss.

The two teams will play in the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., with All-American Jamie Sexton set to take the mound for the Wolves in his second start this season.
